Clarification for cert requirements

Postby AE86less » Sun Jan 18, 2009 10:53 am

I couldn't find this anywhere with a search and was just frustrated by the LTNZ/whatever new name website.

I am looking at options to give the KE70 a bit more torque, including 3AU or 3T. Initially these were a preference due to SOHC looking somewhat like a K series and having factory crossmembers avalible. Then I was reminded that conversions done using all factory components didn't need a cert?

So if i was to go for a 4age or 2tgeu (which, of course, the KE70 wagon was never optioned with), would it require a cert if I'd used a T/AE70 xmember etc?

would that be increasing power by over 20 or 25% (forget which one it is) cause i would say yes you would need a cert.

page ten
basicly worded so that you can really only fit the same or lesser powered version of the same engine.

If you change an engine for damn near anything else you need a cert.

Bigger engine, different family of engine, same engine with lots more power etc.

Any increase in capacity... so really even replacing 4k with a 5k needs to be certed, so 4A/2T = definitely

Depends how you take the rules on the head

No cert required providing the engine "uses the same family of block and cylinder head from the same vehicle manufacturer"

Which should mean any A-series engine with any A-series head should be legal providing you don't increase displacement etc

Also IIRC you even 'technically' need a cert for an ECU swap. :?

WoF stuff...

Substitution of engines:

Cert not required provided that -

when compared with the OE engine, the replacement engine:
– is of the same or less cubic capacity, and
– has equal or less weight, and
– has the same or less power output, and
– uses the same fuel (petrol, diesel, LPG, CNG), and
– uses the same unmodified attachment points and system
(ie, bolts-in), and
– uses the same ancillary equipment (accelerator linkages etc), and
– uses the same family of block and cylinder head from the same vehicle manufacturer, and
– is of the same configuration.

Minor modifications to OE engine

Cert not required provided that -

the modifications result in not more than 20% more power than the OE engine, which may
include the fitting of:
– extractor or free-flow exhaust manifolds, or big bore exhaust systems
– changed intake manifolds
– changed or multiple carburettors
– modified fuel injection systems
– changed ignition systems
– alternative cold air box induction systems.
• see Note 2.

Gearbox substitution

Cert not required provided that -

• the OE gearbox cross-member has not been heated, cut or welded, and
• the OE gearbox cross-member mounting to the OE body or chassis members is unchanged, and
• no replacement gearbox cross-member is used, and
• the OE drive-shaft(s) is un-modified, and
• no substantial modifications have occurred to the floor or gearbox tunnel area, other than
provision for gear-shift mechanism.

Note 2 LVV certification is always required for the fitting of a supercharger or turbocharger as a modification, or the substitution of a turbo or waste-gate, or the re-chipping of electronic engine control units on turbo cars.

I got pulled up on this while getting a green sticker off my car. Ended up talking to 3 different low volume cert guys, 2 of them said its only if it increases power by more than the 20%, the other one said that it does need a cert because any mod that increases power by any amount needs a cert
So If you can prove it hasnt increased power that much, you should be sweet.

So I might as well go the whole hog and do a 4/7age or 3t since heaps of people in authority feel that basically anything should be certed.

Either that or go for something like a 3/4A-U and pretend it's a 4K :P

An engine swap in that SHOULD be certed, not just because authority people think so.

And if you're going for a warrant somewhere that they cant even tell that its not a K series engine then I wouldn't want to be trusting them with a safety check on your car

You interperated that quite badly. When I said that people in authority think so I was defering to superior knowledge. When I added " :P " to the end of a sentence I was indicating sarcasm/a joke.

quite being pawns to the rules.

you really think jo blog wofs stations going give a rats ass if you swap one shit single cam carb engine for another single cam carb engine.

just go buy logic, if its safe, if you increase the power increase the brakes.

people need to stop paying 400 dollars for a cert and support local wof places

STOP GOING TO LTSA PLACES!

dont support them then, what happened to common sense. there going to make the rules as tough as possible because there making money. you prolly undergo a LVV cert and they prolly do no more checking than my local wof place.

hell my wof place commended me on a the tidy job id done converting it to manual and the engine conversion itself.
