From owning the cars in question my esitmation is that a stock GTT vs a Series 1/2 SW20 would be about even in a straight line, but the MR2 would be better in the handling dept. Series 3+ SW20 would beat a stock GTT any day.

Modified GTT would definitely lose to similarly modified MR2.

FWIW my GTT which came with Blitz intake & turbo, HKS exhaust, HKS F-CONV piggyback ECU registered 265HP @1.2Bar on a Blitz power meter would do 0-100km/h in at best 6.3sec. My SW20 with ARC Cold airbox, 3" exhaust and MoTeC ECU registered 280HP @1.2Bar and did 4.97 as it's best 0-100km/h time before the clutch gave out.

The engines would probably be very close in crankshaft HP, but the GTT loses out in drivetrain losses and lower power to weight ratios. It's no wonder that there are quite of few SW20's with basic mods doing 12s, but I have yet to hear of a similarly modified GTT, or any GTT for that matter, breaking 13s.

As for handling, while you can make a GTT handle better than a stock MR2. It doesn't take much work, apart from some good shocks, to make the MR2 better than the GTT could ever be, except perhaps in the wet (4wd FTW).

gen 1 mr2 gt @ 14 PSI here - I was surprised when a newish mazda hatchback thing kept up during a blast up the airport motorway at lunchtime yesterday. I backed off and saw the badge as he went past - (MPS)

Researched - 190kw through the front wheels - wtf? Seems like quite a mean little car...

Comparing Apples to Pineapples, my ST165 (gen 1 engine, 200k, completely stock long block, gutted TVIS and matched ports) with Blitz ECU and ST205(steel) turbo and ST205 i/c ,got low 13s on the quarter mile (that was before 3" exhaust and crazy wastegate setup that I have)... That was at about 1.1bar as well, so yeah say put that engine combo in the MR2 and you can get to low 12s. Impossible with such light mods with GTT. It is easier to make ST205 faster than GTT just because GTT is a bit heavier (although I could be wrong), and simply you could run a lot more boost (8.5 c/r my ST165 survived 2bar spikes before I fixed over-boosting, I would assume ST205 is stronger in that department).

176 kph still running factory ecu it is heavy but there is no way an mr2 could compete with 60 foot times the caldina launches hard off the line.

that's some impressive power mate :D congrats! oh and you'd be surprised how quick an mr2 is off the mark. I was getting consistent 1.7sec 60ft times with a slightly shagged clutch (probably helped stop the wheelspin) which is about the same as the evo boys were getting

Bit of a difference between a $20k car (if you can find one) and a $10k car though eh?
