Can anyone get exhaust pipe at a decent price, AKL?

Postby RomanV » Wed Jan 21, 2009 3:25 pm

Hi people,

I'm looking to need approximately 2 meters of exhaust piping in either 2.25 or 2.5", and a 1/2 donut or 2.

Dont suppose anyone here can get it at a better price than if I went to pitstop or similar?

Or otherwise have any suggestions on a good place to go to get some.

Thanks
Dave

Woolf seem to get good feedback. Not sure how expensive they are for sourcing pipe and haven't used them yet. But I will probably go there based on what I've heard when I get that far down the track with my car.

Need project update BTW. Keen to see more RWD Redtop Beams

Yeah I've heard good things too, but generally about the workmanship etc side of things, which I'm gonna be doing myself.

I cant find the charger for my camera, so no updates till then I guess.

However progress is still full steam ahead, engine start up aint far off.

Happy to annoy the neighbours while getting it up and running, but it'll need an exhaust at some point haha.

Aaahh so I thought I'd get a feel of what costs what just ringing around...

2m length of 2.5" pipe from pitstop = $110. ($55 per meter)

2m length of 2.5" pipe from Woolf = $49. ($26.40 per meter) :o

Even if Woolf is quoting without GST, how could pitstops price possibly be justifiable?

Woolf mufflers FTW by the looks!

Only buy your bends/donuts from woolf, you can get straight steel tube really cheap from steel wholesalers. I use North Shore Steel, on Diana Drive, Wairau Park.

2m of tube that diameter shouldn't cost more than about $30.

A few months ago I bought 4 180deg Mandrel bends in 3 inch mild steel for $80 all up from a place called tube bending on Cryers Rd. East Tamaki. Cheaper for cash but no eftpos available.

I went to fletcher steel on Great South road for the straight pipe but that was $150 for 6m of 3 inch which is the minimum I had to buy.
Should be plenty of cheaper options for that.
Luckily I had 2 cars needing exhausts

Cool, thanks, I'll check that out tomorrow. 8)

Would be stoked if I could get some bends and lengths for that cheap!

The bends sold at Tube Bending on cryers rd are usually rejects - not always due to quality but presumably sometimes for other issues. I've bought a number of bends from them in the past, and they were all pretty good. Don't think they'll have any 2.25" though. Usually the rejects are all stainless, and I didn't think the really carried stock of mild steel bends.

Anyway - as has been said, Woolf are a good option for cheap bends, flexis, mufflers, flanges, gaskets etc, but the rejects from tube benders are probably cheaper.

Ahh no - Tube bending does sell seconds but 99% of the time they sell you proper items from there sale stock (out of packaged boxes ready to go out to customers).

I would highly recommend them for bends but they only go up to 3".

I'm just going off a search on yellow.co.nz, but you could try:

Steel Traders - A division of H.J.Asmuss & Co Ltd
11-15 Gough St Seaview Wellington
04-939 6699

http://yellow.co.nz/companies/Steel-Pro ... _1548.html

Give them a call, if they don't have what you want, chances are they'll be able to point you in the direction of someone who does.
