st205 celica gt4 info

Ok, so just took an st205 for a spin ... trademe listing: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 574823.htm.

Awesome fun ... BUT a few little issues.

4th gear synchro is f*cked, and 1 and 2 aren't as crisp as they should be .. any ideas on how much to fix that all up?

Also, something in the engine bay whined a tiny bit when i gave it the beans in 2nd gear, didn't sound like turbo spool, and I have no idea what it was. They guy said he looked after the car himself, gave it all oil changes frequently etc etc, but I just dunno. It's way cheaper than this: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 805897.htm, but then again I may just have to spend the money I don't speand on the silver one on getting sh*t sorted with the white one.

Any thoughts? All are welcome

i wouldnt touch that white one if the synchros have had it, but wouldnt spend that much around on the silver one either, wait around i reckon..something better should pop up.

yeah really not keen on the silver one .. but the white one is pretty straight, engine seems mint, car's obviously been looked after, only prob is 4th gear synchro and apparently it was like that when he bought it... doubt it but he could be telling the truth ... it's pretty much exactly what I want so really at a dead end as to what to do

It would cost an arm and a leg to replace syncros on any GT4 unless you could remove and install the gearbox yourself as the engine needs to come out. Syncros in 4th should be fine on any GT4 at those k's unless it's been run on the wrong type of oil, poor driving style etc. 2nd gear in an st205 uses tripple cone synchros iirc which from what I've seen pretty much don't wear out (still good in gt4sum's st205 after 200k)
WTF is unpatrolled handling supposed to mean? Unparalleled handling?
And I don't think a front lsd was even an option on any st205 either so that's bs.
What boost was it running? perhaps the bov was leaking?

Maybe bargain the guy down on price a bit to compensate on gearbox rebuild or replacement?

Yeah I think he talked a bit of smack which is why i'm a bit hesitant. 1st and 2nd weren't bad, just a little stiff, and loosened up a tad after driving a while. That really pisses me off about the 4th gear synchro as if I left it unchecked it might end up having to be fully replaced which would be a huge hassle. I think he means unparalled (he's russian). Engine was bone stock apart from intake and BOV (and 1/2 exhaust) and never been tampered with (apparently), didn't sound like a BOV leak either

Well the white one:
Was far from being Toyota's most successful rally car, unless getting kicked out for cheating is considered success.

That silver one has been on TM for bloody ages. Tell them to knock $2k off the price, if they don't take it wait a couple of months and offer it again.

hahaha yeah i thought that was a pretty interesting comment too.

Yeah I'm thinking of offering him 10k for it, with a trade in on mine for 11k ... so 1k my way. If he says no it's his loss really that car's been on the lot since I think may last year

it did cost me an arm and a leg to replace a cracked syncro hub and all the syncros in my st185 box :lol: then again, i was paying for knowlege and quality over just being cheap.

And for me, it was the devil you know, the devil you don't know.

the way the gearbox is attached to the engine, the easiest solution is to drop the whole engine out, though some how Mile Udy Automotive dropped my g/b out seperate to the motor.

if its is a bit sticky on the gears, then the gearbox oil may just need a change, but if you are looking at dropping the engine out while getting the gearbox fixed, it could run $1500+ if not more with time and labour to get everything out.

Sometimes st205 boxes come up on TM and they are around the $1k mark.

OK, so, took the silver one for a decent drive today.

Best offer that Mr Tracey could give me was my car, plus $1500 cash his way, and he repairs a crack in the bumper. I could probably get that cash down to a grand, but still, that's money out of my pocket and I'm getting less than what my car is worth and paying more than what his is worth, which I'm not happy with. Benefits of the silver one: less kms, seems to be in good working order, sunroof. Benefits of white one: f*ckloads cheaper, has everything done to it in terms of mods that I would want to do, relatively low kms (160xxx ... is that bad???), and IMHO looks better in white on white. The probs I have with the silver one is the price and the gay wheels. The probs I have with the white one is the 4th gear synchro being f*cked (can still put into gear fine, just crunches). I know it costs a lot to get the gearboxers fixed on gt4's, but for $7k I will have $4-$5k (based on selling my car for approx $12k) to spend on getting it mint, of which I should only have to spend around $2-$2.5k (gearbox fixed + fluids/filters/etc).

I know it's not really your guys problem, but most of you are way more knowledgable than me, so your opinions really are appreciated.

Yeah that's all dented up and I don't really like it in red haha

EDIT: after having a better look at it, a testdrive wouldn't hurt at all ... hmm ... stil though, really don't like it in red :S

don't get the red.. dents would be an ass to fix and its stock with higher kms

personally i'd get the white and have the g/b fixed.
You have a range of stuff already done to the car that you would have probably done anyway.

spend some money on the g/box and be assured that the problem is fixed and you have a solid car.

While the box is out, get the flywheel skimmed (not lightened) and check the clutch for grip and see if it needs a replace.

Do belts and fluids while the engine is out as well as you say.

Basically buy the car, giving it a thorough going over so you know the status of the vehicle's engine and move forward from there :)

Don't buy either of them. It's a buyers market these days, so just wait until something that is really good turns up, because it will.

Take this with as many grains of salt as you want, but a colleague of mine used to run a yard in Auckland. I was talking crap about cars, and car buying as you do. I mentioned a car on Ted Tracey's lot, and he instantly piped up with 'don't buy a car there, they buy damaged cars and fix them'.

I have no clue if this is true or not.

At the stage where my colleague said this, he had no car yard affiliation at all, so didn't have any reason to lie to me. Anyway, it's up to you if you want to do anything with that opinion 8)

Leon I have heard that Ted Traceys are a bit dodgy, which is why I havn't just gone up to him and said sweet lets make a deal.

As Dave said, the white one is the best option. I'm yet to sell my car though and trading it in would just be stupid, so really I'm just waiting till mine is soldskies.

Dave, you're on the money there, with any car I get I'll give it a thorough going over.

The biggest problem I have with the white one is that it's done 160xxxkms, and while I have a little money to keep things on track, I am a student and I don't want to sink a whole lot of money into something that will just keep f*cking out. I'm bascially dead set on a gt4 unless something marvellous comes along, and that white one is a good bet, but It's just such a risk to take to end up with a lemon when buying cars with high(ish) ks. Will doing a full AA inspection (the $150 doodaa) let me know whether it's a lemon or not? How do I go about getting a good inspection before I buy a car?

EDIT: the silver gt4 has been sitting on ted's lot since about may or june last year, which is a pretty big turn off

Seriously, sell your car first. Then with the cash in hand (so to speak) get serious with the car yards. As soon as you are a cash buyer the ball is in your court. Don't be afraid to walk away from a deal. If they need to sell (Which they do at the moment) they will meet you at a mutually agreeable price.

Offering them real money right there on the spot is worth more than saying "would you take this for it but I need to sell my car first"
