We can all be dead set on an object of desire, but it is really really necessary to have it now? I only say this because I see so many people who have over extended themselves and subsequently have ended up in financial difficulties because of this desire.

TBH, if you have a car and it works, save more pennies and wait as Leon says until the right car comes along.

I used to be a student (once upon a time...) i used to rock around in a 1.3 mitsi mirage.. that suited me fine. Got me around the country, very economical (good for a student) and i didn't care when some one spilt beer in the back. The only way my mates had hotted up cars was because they had previously worked overseas, saved or over extended themselves with finance (we're talking 3 years to pay off a car?? WTF).

I just save and wait and then buy what I want and dont' screw myself over in the process.

Save more, have more options later, do more stuff up front initially instead of piecemeal.

I have a little money to keep things on track, I am a student and I don't want to sink a whole lot of money into something that will just keep f*cking out.

That being the case, chill until you're earning, keep running around in some POS car that is cheap to run, then when you're earning save a bit until you can get a really great example of the car you're after.

That way, even if it does go bung then, at least you're not utterly screwed, and end up having to ditch a broken car for 1/4 what it is worth.

I've seen a few people screw the pooch in a huge way through buying cars that break expensive parts.

Seriously, sell your car first. Then with the cash in hand (so to speak) get serious with the car yards. As soon as you are a cash buyer the ball is in your court. Don't be afraid to walk away from a deal. If they need to sell (Which they do at the moment) they will meet you at a mutually agreeable price.

Offering them real money right there on the spot is worth more than saying "would you take this for it but I need to sell my car first"

Yeah i understand that, and agree, except the way he's undervaluing my is pretty crap, and the mark up he's put on the gt4 is unacceptable. Sure there's only 90 odd ks on the clock, but that shouldn't warrant a $5k+ difference over the same car (with, I might add, more "safe" mods ie mags, exhaust, sounds, intake and bov), with 60 more ks and a worn 4th synchro

Which is what I was planning on doing ... Tradeins are good for cars that are on their last legs

But yeah, about the desire thing, I do desire this car, which is why I'm getting it. I realise fully that I don't need it AT ALL and my current car is a much more sensible option. But at the end of the day cars are important to me. Nobody really needs a flash car, they get it because they feel good when they drive it and it makes them happy. While my options at the moment may not seem very good, I'm happy to wait because I know that the right one will pop up, and when it does, I'm there.

Everything in there was a bit of a rip off. $19995 for a stock as anything silver V7 STi with 60000ks.

Hah, I was going to state that students have too much money nowdays but I guess I owned a 10 year old Celica Supra when I was a student!

The Ted Tracy car is fugly (apart from the wheels). Far too much, you are better off buying a cheaper one and throwing some money at it.

Gearbox issues may be the shaft cables (unlikely), but don't underestimate the cost. An aftermarket warranty won't help you there either.

The white celica you have driven with synchro problem, it belongs to my best mate.
I know most of the things about it, so here is the list:
We have replaced shonky SS joints on it from my celica (when I replaced them with brand new), the SS joints had on them about 100k pretty good condition (I have replaced mime because I am perfectionist)
The car has same performance as mine (we dragged it when he got it @ approx 150k on his vs 110k on mine), so no power loss from wear.
The engine is in mint condition.
He serviced it regularly.
The turbo is little bit whiny but considering poddie I would say it is not too bad for kms it has done.
He bought his straight after I imported mine (he quite liked it I would say).

yeah really not keen on the silver one .. but the white one is pretty straight, engine seems mint, car's obviously been looked after, only prob is 4th gear synchro and apparently it was like that when he bought it... doubt it but he could be telling the truth ... it's pretty much exactly what I want so really at a dead end as to what to do

As for hissing, it is probably because the BOV is bypassing the turbo in off-boost condition (I never actually paid much attention to it), remember it runs pod filter...
As other gear being notchy, when I drove it, it seemed to be fine except the 4th gear, you might try to change oil to multritrax, as one thing he never did is replace gear oil...

P.S. he browses toyspeed occasionally and he is quiet tough guy, he also known as Hellmaker (Akane knows what I am talking about), so watch it

haha really? random. Yeah I asked him how often he goes to the gym, he's a pretty big dude .

I really like his gt4, really nice and straight, but as I said 4th gear synchro and (as you said) a "whiny" turbo is a bit of a problem, considering they are 2 of the most expensive things to repair on a GT4, but I'm still really thinking about it ... so tempted to take it with that giant turbo, strap it on and go for it haha .

I managed to get more than what I was selling mine for at a yard He offered me 7 for my Skyline when I was getting the Forester, I told him I had it on trademe 13, so he gave me 9, but it was only on trademe for 8,500 lol
