head gasket blown, engine ruined... but why?

Postby rollaholic » Thu Jan 29, 2009 9:34 pm

alright, its not a toyota, but i know there are some clever heads on this forum so thought i would post up some pictures and see what people thought.

its a 2.2 out of a vectra for the records sake :D

damage to ring land on cylinder #2

damage to head & valve above said ring land
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/ ... CN0813.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/ ... CN0814.jpg

some pics of the headgasket - you can see its gotten rather warped in places
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/ ... CN0816.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/ ... CN0817.jpg
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c296/ ... CN0818.jpg

im curious as to what people think came first - the presumed detonation or the headgasket?

personally im leaning towards the headgasket... it was replaced approx 6 months ago, but the head bolts were not. after all the discussion about torque to yield headbolts a few weeks ago i thought it might be an interesting example.

Got the piston out yet?

Head gaskets don't tend to do that sort of damage

IMO head gasket came last. It got so hot so suddenly the damages to other components first, and then the headgasket changes shape due to extreme tempretures.
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

my theory was headgasket > overheating > soaring combustion chamber temp > detonation

we had another vectra blow a second head gasket in a similar time frame last year, once again no new headbolts.

put new headbolts in and has been sweet for 12 months +

HRT - im not taking the piston out, we are replacing the entire engine. though i could pull it to bits if you thought it might shed some light?

I'd be curious to see how bad the side of the piston is if you get bored :P

i should be clearer when i say the headgasket had blown

when it came in, i started pouring water into the reservoir to see what would happen. after about 6 litres and not a drop on the floor i was thinking, what the $&#$% is it doing with it all?

then i heard a gurgling sound and the sparkplug holes of all four cylinders started overflowing with water!

HRT - we are getting the replacement engine tomorrow i think, so might take the motor apart next weekend. im kinda curious too! if there was much debris it was too big to come out the oil drain

mr30% - cam timing was sweet, and the headgasket is complete as far as i can tell - i think what fell in it was a bit of valve :P

wouldnt coolant into the chambers cool things and make detonation less likely? combination of cooling and water injection!

maybe detonation causing gasket failure?
is that damage on the exhaust valve a chip? or from a burnt valve?

but i think runningrich has it!

wish i could have seen your face when water came out the plug holes

:o

and i guess the coolant would cool things down for a bit, till it all got used up :P
