HIACE's and HILUX's

ok i did a similar post earlyer but am looking for a new daily as the one i have is no use anymore, im needing something that is reasonably good on gas, tidy, room for parts and can tow my KE on a trailer with no problems, iv been looking at hilux's and hiace's mainly because there toyotas and toyota = realibility

whats you opinions on these vehciles and what would you think would suit my needs more, also let me know what engines are lemons and what are good, or anything else for that matter that i should know

how much have you got to spend? ideally you need something with a 2.4 or 2.7 petrol (4 cylinder) or a 1KZ (3.0DT) if you're wanting to tow anything without being a traffic hazard

Ive got a '94 Hiace supercustom with the 3L turbo diesel. Awesome vehicle, incredibly handy for all sorts of stuff. the seats fold flat so we chuck a mattress on top and use it for camping, comfy as. i take the rear back seats out during rally season, can fit all my gear in plus have room for 4 people + driver, and tow the rally car. bloody handy in my opinion, can fit way more stuff in than a hilux, go the van!!

just watch out for warped heads... they all do it but only if they get hot. just make sure the cooling system is up to scratch. my van has done nearly 360000km ( with recon engine - due to warped head ), and its still good as. only just run in!

My dad used to own two 1994 Hiace Vans, both done ~150,000kms. Both 3.0L Turbo Diesels, one 4WD, other 2WD and were both thrashed but still never missed a beat, probably had to take them in for problems twice in the time we had them (about 7 years).

Absoultely awesome vehicles, we used to tow my brother's Civic around the N.I. to events. I would immediatly recommend one to anyone needed a car like this.

the 3l turbo deisels go really well, or you can do a 4l lexus v8 coversion like a work mate of mine

cheers for the feedback guys, so a vans the way to go? how much am i looking at for a 3L deisel? im only realy wanting to spend upto 6k max as i still need to finish my current project

i have had every model and shape hiace they are dam good vans i always have bought petrol vans as i like atleast some grunt. If you can get a newzealand new van the jap ones arent as good unless you get the super custom ,but they do have the head problem. The 2.4 petrol is an awsome engine i used to trash mine every day of its life carried tons of weight every day , towed my boat. I did 330000 ks and still went as good as the day i bought it . I have an 07 hiace 2.7 petrol now and that goes even better with its 111 kw

if you do get a supercustom, get some beefed up rear springs for it
they are made to carry ppl. not 3 tons of crap....

Well, we just recently sold both the vans (about 2 months ago) for $9000 each, but they were in pretty good condition. i.e. no dents or anything like that.

You could probably get one for $6k pretty easily, though obvoisuly not in as good condition as the ones my family had.
