20 valve using oil

ok the mrs has a 92 fxgt 20 valve silver top and its using lotsa oil

im thinking worn rings?????

something else maybe?

also the little engine light came on so drove home from where i was turned it off and turned it back on again and it had gone any reasoning for this? topped up the oil tho so maybe that had something to do with it?

In the engine bay, stick a wire between te1 and e1 on the diagnostic port next to the afm, turn the ignition on to 'acc', the engine light will flash the corresponding code. It will either constantly flash if no codes, or go say, flash.. pause.. flash flash flash flash flash longer pause.. then repeat, this would be code 15.

Using oil.. if it isn't leaking it, then its' burning it, so its' rings or valve stem seals or whatever, get a compression test done and compare against factory specs to determine engine condition. If thats' okay, then it may be valve stem seals. :)

20 valve 4age's are known to use oil btw. As RS13 has pointed out, its probably due for a rebuild anyway.

What oil do you use with it? Do you use the same oil consistently?

Some will burn faster than others.

When did it last get a full oil change?

Our blacktop 20V carib uses heaps of oil when it is due for an oil change,
first 4000km will use hardly any, then use a litre in the next 1000K,and then it gets an oil change and it's right again.
