Bushings

Hiya, did a search under "bushings" but could not find an answer

I have just received a bushing kit for the sw20, anyone have any advice for getting rid of the old rubber bushings in a resonably equiped home garage?

Some website mention burning them out but i dont have any welding gear or anything like that.

Keen to hear from anyone who has done this before

Normally referred to as bushes on here.

Burning is what I heard too, maybe take off you hot plates on ya bbq and suspend the bushes above the burner?

I'm assuming you have a mans kitchen anyway easily accessible hot flame

I put a butane torch under "welding gear or anything like that", never know though I guess

i agree. should be able to be pressed out. i wouldn't be heating up anything to do with suspension.

you can burn bushs out, but you have to burn the rubber, not heat the steel!

some bushes are press out, and some require you to keep the old shells in place and burn out the rubber. ask the supplier what you do with the brand you got

burning that sort of stuff takes way longer than you would expect

and stops being fun after the first face full of ash / fumes

Just cut the end off the bush and prise it out with a screwdriver or something

Front and rear control arm bushings
Front and rear strut bar bushings.
Front and rear anti-sway bar bushings
Rear strut bar control arm to chassis bushings


Dont have any butane torches or anything like that im afraid... could cut the end off i guess... heating the metal is a no no?

hmm iv only done an aw11 but im pretty sure they use a lot of the same bushes, and they were press out.
however you can burn the rubber out and carefully hacksaw the shell so you can collapse it and remove if you cant get to a press

Oh right... what sort of people have a press?

Engineering places, some mechanics i'm guessing.

Sometimes you can press the new ones in using a vice with a bit of lube. Possibly even press the old ones out with a vice too. Would just take a bit of creativity

A hammer, a screwdriver and an air powered hacksaw should get any out

I just did the ones on my mr2 using a bench vice and a number of sockets etc to act as supports/drifts.
