A GT Corolla was $45K, and MR2 was about $47K from memory.
Wages were theoretically lower and access to finance more difficult.

If you worked in the motor industry in the 80's, as I did, you'd know that in those days we had import licence, high customs duty, government subsidies for manufacturers and a high value dollar.
Cars were expensive but there were good margins in them. We didn't have imports in the numbers that we have now and values didn't depreciate quite so fast.
As a consequence we had almost every manufacturer represented here (either with an assembly plant or an importing depot) as it was seen as a good market to trade in.
You'd also know that overseas manufacturers, particularly Japanese ones, had a habit of producing totally different models for different regions - an excess they don't tend to allow themselves today.
At $45k a Corolla GT Hatch wasn't a cheap car and rather than compete against the Commodore it found some favour amongst buyers of the many hot European hatches that were available at the time.

The real point though is ... $50K for a well designed RWD AE86 replacement/rebirth ... they'd have a waiting list!

Apart from the front bumper that is. And the grille, and the bonnet, and the headlights, and the front guards. Oh, and the doors, and the rear arches and the roof line.
Otherwise very similar!

You're a bit of a $&#$% eh. Just look at the Style of the car. They aren't the same, but share similar characteristics. The lower "mouth" on a Mark X or ISF and compare to the main grille on the 086, if you removed the top grille on either of the bigger cars it would look similar in the front. Headlights are different, yes. Roofline, obviously due to 2 vs 4 door but the shape of the boot and rear guards are styled in the same way.

I see what you mean about the style. Its just the more detailed stuff thats different. Other than that, if you had a shilloute of each, they have similar base lines. Almost like a coupe and sports sedan version.

No, just observant. This picture is a mock up only and as such has likely robbed inspiration from other existing models.
The front looks very Evo 10ish to me. Someone else has stated that the headlamps look like Mazda 6 and the front guards are sort of Mazda 2 style. The bonnet of the drawing and the IS-F are kinda similar but angled quite differently which gives a very different look. The rear guards/arches have a Mitsi appearance to me.
None of these characteristics are shared with the IS-F. There are no common swag lines, hip lines, mouldings or shapes.
It's a good looking car but in my view there's not a distinguishing Toyota looking feature about it. But that's probably another similarity with the IS-F.

Did a quick search and they are presently building the plant to build the cars.
AND there is a hold up as toyota is adapting Direct Injection on to the Flat 4.

They give a good low centre of gravity, and tend to be fairly compact length and width wise... apart from tending to be lower HP/L in NA form (at least everywhere I've looked), I can't really see a downside.

And I would think that being lower and more compact would probably be favourable for weight characteristics for a FR set-up.
