Adjusting Caldina handbrake?

Postby snwtoy » Sat Feb 28, 2009 9:59 am

Hi guys

Can anyone tell me where the adjustment for the caldina handbrake is, and how to use it (if it exists)?

Also, it looks like the handbrake is a shoe system inside the hub of the rotor - do I take the rotor off to access it? To take the rotor off is it just remove the large nut in the midle (after removing calliper of course)? Or is there more to it.

Thanks :)

No to the centre nut.

Remove the brake pads and bracket, then the rotor should come off. But most likely it'll be tight as and you'll likely wreck something getting it off. Cant remember if they have a hole in the rotor for adjusting up the handbrake or not.

Don't take the rotor off because it's also the drum. You'll never be able to adjust it if you do.

Adjustment is through a hole in the rotor, adjuster is at the bottom of the drum assembly marked 47405A(RH)/47406A(LH) is this pic

And back the cable off at the handbrake first too, which involves taking the handbrake surround and centre bit out

Thanks guys. There is a round rubber bung(?) with a slot in it on the rotor. Am I right that this is the bung? Do I just gently pull it out? Turning it doesn't seem to do anything.

Once it is out, how does the adjustment work... do I need any special tools?

Sorry for all the questions

Get the bung out with a screw driver and turn the rotor so the hole is at the bottom and you should hopefully be able to see the adjuster. Get a flat blade screw driver and lever it either up or down so it turns. One way will tighten and the other loosen.

Get it so its just starting to drag. Adjust up the handbrake at the front so there is just a little bit of slack in the cable before it starts to actually do anything and see how it feels. 4-6 clicks is probably about perfect

if you want a really nice handbrake take the rotor off and clean out all the dust thats accumulated, and give the friction surfaces a bit of a sand to remove any glazing.

my preferred technique with internal drum style handbrakes is to slacken the cable right off as mentioned above, then adjust the shoes out until the rotor is locked solid. then back it off 3 or 4 clicks until the rotor can turn again.

Also if you don't mind puling that drum brake mess apart, you could clean the ratchet and lube it with small amount of anti-seize grease, theoretically this system should self adjust (every time when you pull the handbrake the little leaver should push the ratchet to spread and then click back).
