ICE newbie - help me get back in the game!

hey guys, well i finally have a car that i want a stereo in again (has been a while) so i thought i would ask the knowledgeable souls here for some advice before i start spending money.

what im looking for is a reasonably basic four speaker setup, possibly with a small sub if its deemed appropriate. in the past i've been a fan of pioneer headunits and infinity components, but not sure if budget will stretch to infinity anymore. ideally i'd like to build something off trademe with stuff that might be a few years old but was quality when new and is now more affordable

i'd also like to set something up that will allow me to control my ipod through the headunit, and charge it at the same time. im liking my electronica, dubstep, reggae and a touch of metal at the moment - so i guess good bass response is important.

i had a car for a while with two massive 12s in a ported box and a huge amp, was really loud but generally sounded pretty crap. (the joys of being 19) do people think a sub is needed for faithful sound reproduction? i was thinking if i did go down that road i would look for something tight and punchy - in my experience the boomy setups tend to make the bass sound a bit 'laggy' too. maybe a 10" in a sealed enclosure or something? i've been in a few sedans that have proper boots, with nice components in the rear parcel tray that have sounded pretty damn good.

Fronts- Kicker KS650.2 Clicky
I have two sets, brand new still in box, bought but then sold car, can sell you set for $200 (retail is usually 240-260)

Rears - Not really important, most people find rears are just a fill in, so just get a decent factory replacement

Subs - I like Atomic subs, they make a very good 10 inch, called the MA10, not sure on price, got mine for about $250 a few years back...

Headunit - I had a cheap ($200) Panasonic heady, it was so easy to use, had iPod plug, and the control on the heady for the iPod was easy as to use.. But didn't have much tuning options.

do i really need an amp for what im after? i dont see a picture of the 650s on that link emperor, what size are they? also, how exactly are speaker sizes measured? mounting points? cone size?

these speakers will run good off a headunit, amp will just make it alot louder and clearer

Yeah NZICE has some great deals on second hand stuff, you probably can afford Infinity components second hand, and they are worth it. I would definitely go for an amp especially if you want more punch and less boom. As stated, nice components running of the fronts of a 4 channel with a 10" running of the rear bridged and you'd be sorted.

yeah im warming to the idea of a sub at the moment. in previous setups i've tried to get really nice 6x9s for decent bass response, but the car only has provision for round speakers in the rear. the current speakers are shit and bass is fuzzing like crazy with any kind of volume in it.

can anyone tell me how speaker size is measured by the way? ie diagonally across mounting points, or woofer diameter?

i got a DEHP3000IB with approriate cord for ipod control through head unit for a great price, so my headunit is sorted. it seems like the front speaker hole is only big enough for a 4 inch (i presume) speaker, can i get something decent in this size or should i be looking at making some door pods?
