Dead 3S coilpacks... best solution?

Postby RomanV » Sun Mar 01, 2009 6:45 pm

Well, turns out that 3 out of my 4 3S coilpacks are dead.

I dont have nearly enough $$ for brand new replacements, so was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for anything else that would work.

Ezy10s has advised that NA SR20 coils will do the trick, which is a good plan but I'd have to rewire the plug ends... Which is sweet, but I'd rather not if I didnt have to.

Are there any common toyota engines with coilpacks that I'd be able to pick up a set of, that'll do the trick without getting arse reamed in doing so?

I'm thinking 1ZZFE or something might be similar?

Caldina 3SGTE? Altezza?

You could try 1jz-gte ones, off the twin turbo motor, not the single turbo, which AFAIK has a wasted spark setup.

I've got some here you can compare with if you like, unfortunately I can't sell any to you as I need them for my other motor, but if it turns out they'd work, at least you've have another possible source.

Aahh okay thanks for the offer.

I have seen a picture of the 2JZ ones on trademe, and they look a bit different, not sure if they would fit under the cam cover or not.

Have you tried an auto electrical specialist? Or just genuine?

depends on the setup.

Are you running standard ecu?
are they coils with built in igniter?

as there are other options depending on the setup.

post up the numbers and I'll price you a set of aftermarket direct replacements if available.

Yeah, standard ECU.

They are a stand alone coil on plug with a 4 pin plug on them.

One is 12v feed, one is earth, one is the signal from ecu to ignite, and the fourth is a 'confirm' back to the ecu.

Part number on the side of the coil is TOYOTA 90919-02227

They are the same part# as 3S-G(T)E ST210/ST215 Caldina, ST202 Celica, SXA10/11 RAV4 and of course 98/99 3S-GE SW20s.

On thing to note if you're going to get an aftermarket one is that the trigger is 5v square wave.

and due to the fact they have the ignition feedback signal,
you may be pretty limited on options.

Will see what I can do with those numbers at work tomorrow.

With that info, I can tell you JZ ones won't work.

Aaaah, Fivebob to the rescue once more!

At least that broadens the options a bit, 3SGTE caldinas would most likely be the most commonly available source.

I am seriously starting to wonder if there is something FB DOESN'T know.

Best I can do is $300 ea brand new genuine, but not thru toyota,

or $300 for a complete s/h set of 4.

Not sure how that goes with your other options, but seems they may be an expensive item.

Thanks for the help guys.

It looks like I've got a set sorted, just need 'TRDGT4' to confirm shipping etc and I should have a set on the way.

Cant wait to get this thing fired up for the first time!
