Totally disagree have spent 17 years loading my vans with tons of carpet, diesel vans do not go aswell with a load on you get to a hill and you have to keep chopping down gears as your speed drops. As a comparrison my old van 2.4 petrol vs mates old van 2.8 diesel both loaded coming up the bombay hill his speed drops from 110 down to 80 km with foot flat down where as petrol gains speed going up the hill. And the new vans 3 litre turbo diesel barely any difference in torque to the 2.7 vvti

Completely opposite in my experience.
Sure on empty the petrol feels faster, if you put a tonne of crap in it or tow a car it diesel is a lot better...

um yeah, for big loads/towing diesel > petrol in terms of fuel cost and ease.
yeah a petrol may get there, but u have to ring the shit out of it, whereas the diesel will just keep chugging

i have owned every model hiace toyota have ever produced, The petrol tows just as well as the diesel and as for the new 1kzte highly disapointed in lack of grunt will never buy another diesel hiace ever again, and as i was saying i load mine to the roof every day and can assure you petrol pulls loads very well, and can still overtake on a passing lane. Less initial cost ,less servicing ,no road uses ,way more grunt regardless if its fully loaded or empty, doesnt sound like a tractor and buying second hand diesel vans with high kms if it dies you are looking at twice the cost to either rebuild or replace. In my book petrol wins hands down. But if you like driving a tractor on the road then by all means get a diesel, just be considerate of all the traffic stuck behind you on the hills while towing your dirt bikes.

I am part of those sales figures, so yes for years we have had it drummed into us that diesel is better more torque bla bla bla bla So they should have more torque 9 times out of ten they have a much larger cubic capacity , and for years diesel was more economical but now days just not the case

our diesel vans will tow a dead car up our reasonably steep ramp at work with no throttle. idling. thats diesel torque for you. try that in a petrol

1KZTE is low on grunt? You probably had a dud one. It is the best 3L diesel of it's era out there beats all those isuzus/nissans/mazdas/whatever.
I don't care what you say, but I enjoyed towing a race car behind a prado (same deal as 1KZTE hiace but heavier), while it was horrible to tow same car behind a petrol van. I had to do 20km/h on passing lanes up hill to just keep moving. And you have to rev the shit out of it.
I worked in a car yard, and have driven a helluva lot of vans, and diesel are a lot nicer to drive (even nicer than newer ones with VVT).

european diesel yes not the jap stuff, i am not talking about the dirty jap import 2 litre petrol engines they are a pos. The engines that are in the the price range of this topic, are your 2.8 diesel and your 2.4 petrol Each to there own i quess no one can win this arguement.

The 2.4 petrol van I used last weekend,
used more petrol to go to chch and back, ( 160k each way on the flat)
than the diesil turbo van used to go to teretonga and back,
3-400k each way and steep as hills at dunedin)

And i agree with the euro diesil thing too,
as the 2.7L Turbo diesil campervan that mum and dad have
loaded up with the race car and trailer and all spares,
will drag dads 3.0l non turbo ( 5L motor) hilux off at the lights when the hilux is empty, and outrun it on the open road.

I would imagine a diesel wouldn't use any petrol, so thats probably why it used less?

On a serious note, are the petrol and diesel vans of the same generation?

I drive a 2001 petrol 2.4L Hiace, and it does ok for day to day work, but towing a 2T digger it didn't really like that. It managed ok, but it just felt underpowered for the job. But that is a bit extreme I guess.

you can watch us do it if you like. in addition, the boss has the latest 4 litre v6 prado, his parents have the 3 litre turbo diesel older shape. it pulls away from the petrol on hills
