Cheap Intercooler piping ideas

Postby gleem » Fri Mar 13, 2009 7:58 pm

ive got everything i need now to finish my agze to 4agte conversion in a ae101, im doing it all cheap as possibe. I have top mount and a front mount, not to bothered on what to use, I was thinking why does it need to be alloy or steel when ill be running 15 psi. Was thinking of getting some sort of tuff 2 or 2.5" rubber gose and use some old heat wrap. Why wouldnt this work. Rb25det turbo on it

Hose can flex and even collapse. Intercooler piping is not too expensive really. About $30 per bend, which normally totals 600mm or pipe.

heaps of factory cars come with massive lengths of rubber or plastic intake piping.

not many run 15psi tho

Yeah if you were going for a low boost setup, then by all means go for a hose, but 15psi!

You do make a good point there, but why go cheap on a 4AGTE setup?

yeah that pvc piping sounds like me what could i use to protect it from the heat. Would manifold heat wrap work. and ill use sillicone joiners. Engine bay will probably get quiet hot as i most likely do a lot of diesl stand stills. What happens if id it does burst or milt a bit. just turbo will be useless. Any engine damage?

Watch out for the fuel cut on the AE101 computer, if you're still using that. They cut at 14-15psi boost. That'll be no good for the motor.

The AFM can boost higher without fuel cutting, but the MAP sensor ones are limited to 1 bar, due to the MAP sensor voltage.

A stock ZE can handle heaps more than that as well. That is with an aftermarket ECU and a good tune though. that's the most important thing, if the tunes out it'll either run rich and poo or blow up completely.

a cheep set up that works well is those subaru water/air intercoolers.
you can pick up a cooler, pump, lines and rad from pick a part for about $100.
as its in the engine bay the overall piping length is allot shorter so less money needs to be spent on steel/stainless/alloy bends and expencive silicone hose joiners and hose clamps.
make the piping once pice as much as possible to keep the number or joiners and hose clamps down. use steel if your on tight a budget and paint it.
these intercoolers work well if set up right, perfict for a daily driven car as in traffic the air temps are constant. and done exceed 30-35deg c on most set ups i have seen. if your after big hp then get the inlet and outlet moddifye for more flow and you away laughing.
daily: ep71 turbo s 2et 90hp atw 15.5sec 0-400m (stock) current 5efhte + ct9b on 6psi, 13.7@158km , torque steer??
nothing sounds like a 2stroke engine on the rev limiter

I use a piece of radiator hose on my car for piping,

just a generic bend, UHB50 from repco I think.

Use it directly onto the turbo outlet.

Have seen them fail, but have also seen the samco and turbosmart stuff do the same.

I carry a spare, but have not had to use it at 20psi for 2 years.

But i wouldn't use a large length of it.

yeah ok. ive got some intercoolers all ready. but i seems ill end up going steel. Why is it better to keep joins at a minimum? because of ther price>

yea less joins = less price. silicone joins are twice the price of steel bends, you also need to buy hose clamps, and can come off.

go to a marine shop (eg 121 Marine), they sell cooling hoses for boats, various sizes and thickness and not expensive, they are a lot tougher than car radiator hoses.
