How does the 4-AGE 20V stand up to mileage?

Postby Kittah » Mon Apr 20, 2009 4:24 pm

Hey guys,

I've been offered a swap for my S13 Silvia, for an AE111 Levin BZ-V and I'm sorely tempted. The only thing holding me back is that it's travelled something like 206,000km. What can I reasonably expect from an engine that's travelled that far, generally speaking?

I know it's pretty vague and depends highly on how it's been treated, but what are your thoughts when the idea of a 200,000km AE111 BZ-V enters your mind?

Cheers :)

My silvertop had done 210,000

Its got slow oil leak somewhere, burns a bit of oil if driven hard, and the VVT pulleys are rattling a bit.

But apart from that it runs perfectly

I'd check under the cam covers as per viewtopic.php?t=72435. Other than that, if its' reasonably quiet and doesn't blow much oil smoke then it would likely have been looked after. My car has done 180,000km on its' silvertop, uses minimal oil between changes, as was said VVT pulley is a little rattley but its' awesome otherwise.

Get an AA check if you're worried.

Presumably that's the sort of thing I can get an idea of by shining a light under the oil filler cap. Cheers for that heads-up, though I like to hope that kind of build up is a rare occurrence

Definitely. Hoping I can book a check and organise a test drive for the same day.

Anything anyone can advise me of in terms of things to look out for when buying an AE111? :)

AA people don't do real compression tests.
Not that is important as it is easy to spot low compression symptoms on a car without doing compression test (it is good as confirmation)

most 20v's I've seen have been rebuilt by 200k, best I've seen is 440k odd but that engine was wasted.

Were talking about highly thrashed 4 banger cars here, not trucks.

See a stone cold start-up / watch for puffs of smoke out the back, new engines shouldnt do it, older 20v do. -confirm with a compression test (remember to remove the ecu fuse!)
VVT pulley will most likely be poked by 200k making the engine sound like a truck.

Then again, it may have been owned by a grandma, who had it serviced with synthetic oil every 4k.

Mrs's 20v just clicked over 335,000kms the other day.

Honestly it is getting a little tired in terms of oil usage, but runs flawlessly, never misses a beat.

And it still gets driven hard every now and then when i'm driving

As they said above, as long as its been looked after 200km is nothing at all

Definately, the wife's old AE101 was nearing 200k's when she sold it and it was still running like a dream. Aside from ye olde VVT rattle of happiness.
Though I've seen blacktops die much much earlier than any silvertop, so it is a bit of a lottery really.

Why is the BZ-V the best of them?

The rest of the car is apparently in good nick; seller took it for a warrant today and said it flew through, and that the mechanic was confident of its condition. He said the cambelt and VVT belt have been done recently, and the super strut was done some 18 months ago, so it's all sounding all right.

I'm planning to organise a chance to go and have a look at it and get a vehicle inspection done, and to take it for a test drive. Pity it's about two hours' drive away, but that's part of the price you pay 8)

VVT pulley is on the cam sprocket, they dont run a seperate belt like a balance shaft
I have to ask - whats wrong with your S13 if you're swapping it for an AE111? Or is there cash involved too?

His words, not mine - I'm not used to fancy VVT things with an S13 :P

It's in amazing condition, probably one of the best largely-original S13s in the country, but...

...it's automatic

I'm at university now studying law, and I just don't have the money to put towards the manual conversion, alas.

Also sound like my old one which is up that way, Is plate AWA475?

Mine was rebuilt at about 170000km's due to excessive oil burnage
