Whats The Worst That Can Happen At High RPM?

Postby celica_xr9145 » Mon Apr 20, 2009 11:08 pm

Well, i was on the way home today and to get there i got to up a steap hill for about half a kilometre, when i drive up there i have no choise but to stay in second gear at around 4500rpm and sometimes higher. I try to shift into 3rd but loses power and have to go back down to second.

Basically, whats the worst that can happen if i stay at high rpm in second gear? Im sure its not ok for the car.

Is there any maintenence i can do to give it a bit more grunt?

Ive driven a 1.6 ford escort with half the power and it gets in 3rd no problem 8O

Assuming you're talking about your celica?

You havent even hit peak torque for that motor at those rpms, and you're still a long way from peak horsepower...

In other words, you're not yet even in the rpm range which the engine was built to do well in.

Go nuts.

Second gear should get you pretty close to 100kph :P

P.S. Bogging the motor and putting heaps of load on it at low rpm can be just as bad, or worse than revving it out a bit. What sort of fuel are you running it on?

I hit 85 at approx 5500 RPM in 2nd in my curren, with a smaller, less powerful engine than your sillycar.

If you look at your dash.. see the needle with numbers 1000-6500... dont let the needle stay in that red part for too long and youll be fine

As long as the car is warm, and has had a relatively well cared for life, it shouldnt be a problem. My civic tends to sit close to 4500 - 5500 RPM most of the way around the thames cost and hills, because thats where i get the best response when i stick my foot down.

4500 in a van is high, not in a 'sports car'

Just make sure you have oil inside and it shouldn't care about those revs. 8000rpm is high

In regards to the escort engine being able to do the hill in 3rd, the engine is different, the gearbox is different and the diff can also determine how fast its actually going at any given rpm. Whats ya rev limit?

Man up and do it in 1st*

9000rpm is high :)
well as long as you are not sitting on rev limiter prolonged times you will be fine (providing there is oil in the motor).
I assume you have 3SGE (red starts at 7ish)?
If it is 3SGE then it even hasn't started to really pull at 4500rpm.

The rev limit is 7000rpm i think

I might start bringing those revs higher and see what this car can really do now i know it will be ok :) :)

As for going up in 1st, not a bad idea, lol

My 1990 MR2 doesn't see over 6k rpm as the power drops off, may be due to the dodgy cat back exhaust.

4500rpm isn't high. Try running 98 octane.

What road you driving up? My car pulls up most of Dunedins steeper streets no problem in 3rd.
But I guess there may be some difference in final drive and car weight between MR2 and Celica.

4age engines are 20 years old, the TVIS on them only opens at 4500 to give them more grunt - and it stays open to 7000+ rpm

it mainly happens up every street in andersons bay, the car is in need of an oil change as im told the oil is dirty, hopefully it will make a little difference 8)
