ae101 S/S ball joint play, from VTNZ green sticker check..

Postby headshotnz » Thu Apr 30, 2009 12:19 am

Hey there..

Got my Levin green stickered for being too loud...

2 1/2 cat back, step down to 2 1/4 to an RPS exhaust and a coby muffler in the middle.

apparently its too loud...... lol.

Any way, that's all gravy, its fair enough any way, could hear me from about 10 minutes away.. :D always put a smile on my face.

Car was brought of toy speed about 4 months ago was de-reg, got new reg etc, but during initial test, left hand top ball joint had to be replaced.

Now in my VTNZ it has failed because of movement.

My mechanic is extremely angry as it really still brand new.

Question is, do the VTNZ people know what there doing?

Got it done at the cbd VTNZ in wellington.

My mechanic, who also has been building race cars for 30 years and a engineer (Peter Zivkovic) if any one knows him.

Said that the way the S/S suspension was designed was to have little to no load, so when using new parts there is going to be a little bit of play, which is perfectly normal. ( I may have quoted him wrong though :) )

As you all know, this will most likely cost me a million dollars to repair.. Not good for a full time student :(

Also, window wiper fluid pump has broken, does any one know were to get another one? and a rough price?

Also, quite angry at VTNZ, front tire was balled, and they said both my back tires should be marked as not safe, but they will leave it because i already have a big list of things to do... I measured them, all the way round, no litle then 5mm of tread. what the hell are they on about?

/rant :)

VTNZ suck pretty badly, I'd see if your mechanic can go an explain to them about the new b/j.
Washer pump, go to pick a part.
And yes, 20v's with 2.5" exhausts are too loud ;)
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time

in my experience they sound droney but whatever floats your boat right!

vtnz can be hopeless at times, maybe get your mechanic to give it a clean, say he replaced it and tell them to call him if they still have a problem

They aren't designed to have any play.

When you say new, were they new Toyota parts or did the old ones get reconditioned?

It must float my boat then :D i dont like the sound of 16v's if that makes a difference?

Have just been to see another mechanic and he said the same thing about a little bit of play on the super strut systems.

Part used was a brand new genuine toyota top ball joint.

Ah yes, noisy 20v’s...

Brought mine with cat back 2.5” which is split to 2.25” with twin 3.5” Cannons (or something like that), tried to shut it up with the silencers but can still be heard coming a few streets away…

I brought it off a deaf guy

in truth any car with an exhaust thats too big for it is going to sound like crap, particularly without any real mufflers in the system.

My 2.5" catback sounds crap, too high pitched and droney at anything more than 3000 rpm. And thats with 2 proper mufflers and a large resonator :?

And yes, VTNZ sucks

Yeah, i think VTNZ are just retarted, im pretty sure it willl most likely be the upper arm or some thing.

Will get it looked at and get one through ( Mark, I think?) the TRD rep on TS.

I know Peter, not as well as I did 30 years ago, but yes he's a good mechanic.
Nevertheless I too think he's wrong on the SS suspension. I cannot recall them having allowable play when not under load.

I wonder if he's confused with Skyline which is as described. VTNZ have the level of tolerance for these in their manual.

Wiper pump ... picka part, Head Auto etc... $5.00?

While I also agree that Peter is a clever man, I don't believe he is correct on the S/S as in my (WOF issuer) mind it should have no play at all.
