Buying an AE111 - What to look out for?

Postby Kittah » Sat May 02, 2009 11:34 am

Hey guys

I'm taking a trip to have a look at a 1996 Toyota Levin and I'm wondering if anyone can point out the major things to look out for with these specifically. Places where rust is common, any common issues they have etc.

Cheers in advance? :)

If you get one, make sure you check the oil every week, untill you are sure it isnt going to burn through it all, so many people do that

Rear sway bar bushes go on them. They make a knocking sound and give the ar$e end a bit of an unusual shimmy when driving.

Superstrut is the biggest thing I found. They cost a lot to replace, but is only really worth replacing with proper TGP, don't go aftermarket.

The oxygen sensors seem to go on them too, depends on the km, etc.
Make sure it's been run on 98 too. Blacktops love higher octane petrol.

Take a small length of wire and check the ECU for codes (paperclip works nicely). Short out pins TE1 and E1 on the diagnostic plug in the engine bay. The Engine check light will flash continuously if there are no codes.
