silvertop ecu not going into diagnostic mode

Postby ChaosAD » Sat May 16, 2009 6:19 pm

Im having trouble getting a silvertop manual ecu into diag mode to set the ign timing.

Ive checked the idl switch is closed and bridged the E1-TE1 connectors back at the diag plug. Ive checked continuity on the ecu board to make sure the te1 and idl pins are earthed.

The engine displays the check engine light (as it should because the knock and oxy sensors arent connected), but with te1 earthed it just stays lit.

Is there anything else I can try? I havent checked for leaking caps yet but would they cause this problem?

I think - but am not sure - that when you bridge the E1-TE1 that the revs change a bit - not much only 50-100rpm. If that's happening then it probably is in diagnostic mode. Also can't remember if they go up or down!!

revs will drop when in diag mode.

the common leaky caps issue causes faults but no codes, and usually no CEL

i assume you have cleaned the contacts, can get very gunked up

Revs dont change and the cel just stays lit regardless of whether te1 is bridged or not.

Awesome, was hoping It could be something easily repairable as I only need the ecu to drive 30km.

I'll fit new caps when they arrive and see if they fix it.

Seems a lot of trouble to go to to drive 30 km :?

Just check the the advance is somewhere between 15 and 20 deg
at idle, then drive where you have to go like yo mama :)

on my old gtz the caps started to melt and caused the car to randomly drop into limp mode. When te1 and e1 were bridged it also did nothing just like yours. ended up replacing the caps in the ecu and all went fine! so basically i am putting my money on that being the problem, as i have also heard it is a common problem but dont know what truth there is behind that.

One of the caps had a tiny bit of leakage that wasn't clearly visible until removed.
Will see how it goes when the bits turn up during the week.

Not a lot of trouble as I was about to make an order through Farnell anyways and changing the caps takes less than 1/2Hr.

Im also wanting to do a quick datalog before pulling the ecu out. Just to see what benefits an aftermarket ecu will have on a stock silvertop.
