Off Center Engines

Postby CelicaGT8 » Thu May 28, 2009 4:45 pm

Thinking of putting my engine in off center, this way it lines up with the old rear drive shaft, but this is like 20 - 30 mm off center, is it common to have the engines off by this much in rwd cars....

well, actually it was on an angle rather than off set

is the diff offset?

Probably not common, although probably doable. Just offset it with heaps of things on the other side of the engine bay, maybe get wheel scales to see how much you're going to need to put on?
Cheers,

if you actually get the measuring tape out, not many vehicles have the engine/box/diff head etc perfectly down the centre line.

Well i mounted the MA70 diff in the same position as the original celica one, this allowed the axels to be the same length and for the main drive shaft to stay in the same position, but the shaft is offset, about 20 - 30mm (cant rember the achual measurment) to the right.

the engine and box will fit 20mm to the right no probs.

But what about putting the engine in the center and having the drive shaft on an angle? or is that a big no no? i dont think it would look right

Yeah my engine in my lotus 7 is on an angle, this is mainly to fit the intake plenum under the bonnet, its not uncommon I have seen it on frasers and lots of other 7's too.

I'm not pro at drive shafts, but surely in the case of 1 piece drive shafts, the angle they leave the engine changes at the suspension travel changes. So probably no issues?

Ah didn't think that hard about it. Unless the drive shaft design (uni joints) etc is different I can't see any problems.

Either way i'm sure someone will confirm and we'll both learn something. :)

Ok, so the new question is:

Is it ok (certable etc) to have a drive shaft on an angle - left to right not up and down

should be fine depending on how much
if it gets to drastic means that the needle rollers get a hard time and the natural turning force is diferent in the rotational force
like when u use a universal joint on a socket the more the angle the harder it is to undo the bolt
jus my 2c

dout it will matter if its only that much, you have to run some misalignment somewhere anyway be it up and down or side to side. if you run eveything dead straight the uni's will die.

Yip, exactly the complaint that uni's in a driveshaft on a car with I.R.S suffers from, cause they drive in one spot all the time, they get notchey fairly quickly
