Bigger 100-120 amp alternator for 4Y engine

Postby cat007 » Tue Jun 09, 2009 3:29 pm

Has anyone ever done this by any chance?

I would like either a 100 or 120amp alternator for my Hiace as there are now 2 big batteries to charge.

The standard alternator is only 55amp - I assume running this isn't going to break anything, but it just means the batteries will take ages to charge?

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated

I cant seem to find anything on the Googles with people swapping them out.....

I know of alternators which bolt straight onto the Y series motor you just need to change the wiring plug, they are around 70-90 amp. because you have 2 batteries in it, i wouldn't think that warrants putting in a bigger alternator, its all down to how much current draw everything running at once has. What have you got in it to require 2 batteries anyway?

It's a campervan. The main battery will power the starter motor and ignition where-as the deep cycle battery will power everything else, lights, stereo, inverter, fridge, water pump etc etc
The idea being, even if I leave a light on or leave the fridge on overnight or anything like that - the next morning when I go to start the car I know that the engine is going to crank over with a fresh un-used battery (even if the other is totally drained). I have a 130 blocking diode so both batteries are able to be charged from the 1 alternator - but neither can draw power from the other....

Do you know more details about these alternators? A 90 amp one would be great!

Cheers :)

from memory it needs to have mountings of 12 and 6 with the 6 being a solid foot type mount and the 12 taking a metric 8mm bolt, and it runs a 4PK belt am I right?

4y with with a 4pk belt? would've thought they're vee belt?
theres a conversion detailed on toymods.net using ford VF falcon alternator on a modified mount and tensioner arm.. this particular conversion is for the T and R series engines but the Y series is basically a T anyway.

hey
you dont need a bigger alternator, what you need to do is wire the deep cycle battery (house battery) through a VSR (voltage sensative relay). What you do is wire house battery seperate to starting battery. Then wire in VSR, what it does is seperates the starting an house batterys, but once the vechical is started and alternator is charging and the starting battery is up to atleast 13.7 volts its joins them togeather so both are charged. once engine is turned off and battery voltage settals to 12.7 its cuts out saving starting battery from being drained by camper accesorys. a VSR is $142.80 at my work. hope this helps any auto electriction should keep them in stock.

Anyone with plenty of clues and not much money would just use an isolation switchzz(a manual one) on a second battery. That's what my mate has on his camper, nor has it ever let him down.

Until you park up after a long drive - forget to flick the switch. Have a few beers. Have a few more. Do some Sambucca shots. Have some more beers. Crash out and go to sleep with 1 or more of the lights on. Wake up in the morning. Flat battery and no-one around to jump you.....and you're WAY to hung over to push start the van.

THAT doesn't sound like fun lol
