PCLink/LinkG3 - Engine speed when cranking??

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sat Jun 13, 2009 10:05 pm

I took the corolla out today to do some work on it, drove about 60km without a problem, done the work, now it won't start. At all. Ever.
From what I can find there is no spark, although everything seems to have power (coil, ignitor). LED on the ignitor will flash bright once on the first crank, then very faint (if at all) after that.

1. When cranking, PCLink consistently shows no engine RPM/speed what so ever. Is this normal?

2. If the dizzy is faulty and not showing any engine speed to the ECU, will the ecu not trigger the ignitor/coil?

Cheers

not to sure about what link's show when cranking but most aftermarket ecu's show 180ish rpm when cranking.

What did you do on the car? i've seen a numer of cars with link's that have issues starting sometimes but not always. it comes down to where they are getting their 12v source for the ecu, if its near the starter and suffers too much voltage drop while cranking the ecu does get enough power to kick things into life, sounds similar to what is happening there

been searching on the link website too, and from what I can read on there PCLink should show a stable rpm while cranking, but mine is showing 0 constantly.

also have no spark and plugs seem dry as, so methinks the dizzy is faulty and not sending the speed signal, or ecu is faulty and not receiving the signal.

ive had the car running for about 8 months now without any problems (like this), always started fine. the work was on the front right wheel bearing, nothing to do with wiring, or welding.
when I first cranked it over after doing the work it sounded a bit slow, so hooked up a jump start pack incase it was a voltage problem, never fixed it. battery has been on charge overnight too, just in case.

if the ecu isnt seeing any rpm signal then its not going to fire the injectors or the ignitors at all.
check all connections to CAS for a start.
failing that swap out the cas for another to confirm (or rule out) that the cas is the issue.

yeah thats what I thought, but wasn't sure. checked all the connections between dizzy and ecu etc, all earth wires were connected etc. finally found the problem was a dodgy earth strap from engine to chassis, the smoking accelerator cable gave it away! replaced them all and added some more for good measure and it fired up instantly, cranks over alot faster now too.

then remembered while the car was on the hoist doing the wheel bearings i took to the tunnel with a sledge hammer so there was decent clearance all the way around (bellhousing was rubbing in a couple of spots). before that it must've been earthing through the bellhousing, after the tunnel was enlarged it broke the circuit
