Estimate or quote I don't think I would go toyota. Besides specialists are always cheaper than the workshop that does everything right?

I will take my car down to the gearbox factory on monday since most of the people say its reasonable and cheap.

I will let everyone know how much it will actually cost me though.

Exactly, I believe it is too cheap to be done correctly.
Ask how much if it's not straight forward, and what not straight forward means.

Hey guys, I took the car down to the gearbox factory on Monday and they called me back today.

The guy told me that the price quoted for me did not include taking the subframe out to get the gearbox out and -

the 6th gear blew up ( 3 weeks ex japan) when they were taking it out so -

they are going to be charging me for taking the subframe out and also getting the 6th gear and the extra time spent on the gear box

which adds up to around $1000 plus gst.

Can anyone tell me if this sounds right?
Am I suppose to pay for the 6th gear when they broke it?

Hey Mr Revhead!
Thanks for first reply.

He said that the teeth of the gears broke as they were using the gear remover. He also said that it is normal that sometimes the 5th or 6th gear breaks.

Thats the thing. I told him the exact same thing that if you guys broke it then why do I have to pay for it? I stressed that I took my car to them and the gearbox was in perfect condition (40k mileage) and I am gettin charged double because of dropping the frame and the 6th gear. I also asked him how long it takes to get the subframe down and he told me half an hour - 1 hour.

he replied saying that it is normal for these things to happen so when they do break they don't pay for it.

So the question is is it really normal for the final gear to break and what should I be responsible for paying.

I would be f**king PISSED!

Never been in that situation before so I can't offer any proper advice. But theres no way in hell you should pay for their uselessness thats completely unacceptable. So i'd ring around other such companies to find out their point of view on the situation.

I hope after our warnings you got a written quote for the full job and I would then use that to dispute the extra charge for removing the subframe. Its their job to know what they are doing, if they don't price it right thats not YOUR fault, thats theirs for yet again being muppets.

it is expected for it to break if you are rough with it, I personally chipped it many times when doing it at home.
To be honest I usually take the gearbox to the gearbox shop to press out the gear. I would be spewing if they would break the gear that they "professionals" should have right tools and skill to press it out.

I would insist not on paying for broken gear.
What were they thinking when they gave a quote and not included labour to removing cross member that most of vehicles poses (apart from civic and starlet, but they would know that from experience which vehicle has it)?

I used to think that gearbox shop was ok, until they "repaired" shudder on a 60g Audi only to have the gearbox blow up after 5k and costing about 10g to fix.

Nope. They are a licensed AA repairer.

I think Sergei has got some very strong points there. At least I know now they are should be professionals and not be breaking 6th gears and putting the responsibility on me.

Have they never worked on a car with an engine in an east/west configuration before or something?
Just about EVERYTHING requires a subframe drop to get the gearbox out!

And you're not paying them to break stuff. I mean, what are the gears made of? Terracotta?

that is the most funnest b/s i have ever read/herd

in other words they didnt have the puller on correctly and broke it
have you seen the broken gear? tto make sure there not yanking your chain? few works shops pull fast ones on pple to make more money

i basicly run awork shop and from my experince if one of my guys breaks a part that wasnt broken" we pay for it and the labour to fit said part "

on a side note tho i would be carefull, some shops have fine print on this type of thing and when things like this happen you pay not them
it all comes down to honesty these days

but if i were in your shoes i would argue the point to tghe max and ask to see in there operations procedure ( or what ever there called now days ) and get them to show you where it states that you have to pay for there $&#$% up

No I didn't see the broken gear. I don't think he is trying to pull that trick on me because the part has to come from Japan ex 3 weeks. Don't think they want to be holding on to my car for that long.
The guy is getting his boss to call me and I will do as you guys say, argue to the max.
I was really surprised when I asked the guy "why should I pay for a part that you have broken" and he just looked at me with a straight face and said "It is part of the job"
I thought I wouldn't be able to get much advise at this hour, Thanks to everyone that is helping me out here. I really appreciate it.

I'm pretty sure that just because you've got it written in some fine print, doesn't make it legal :?

If it ended up in court, I don't see why they would win if they had that sort of fine print in there.

I would also be heading in there to get the broken part. I'd then let them know you are going to get a specialist to check why it broke. Be it fatigue in the metal through normal use or be it through miss use of equipment to remove it.

Of course don't mention the last bit until you have the 6th gear in your possession.
