How to tune a carb?

Hey all

I'm wanting to do a bit of a basic tune up on the Hiace's 4Y.

I'm going to replace the cap, rotor and points as they're due - and then do timing.

But I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to the carb to make sure it's running right? It seems to run mint - the only thing I've noticed is, after about 2/3's throttle the accelerator stiffens up - I've always been under the impression this opens up the secondaries in the carb? Only thing is - power wise there's no change between 2/3's throttle and full throttle....

Or maybe I should just take it to a shop?

Also - it idles pretty high when warm - at about 1000-1100 but I cant seem to adjust it down enough. I think I found the idle screw - but it doesn't seem to do anything lol

With the high idle, it might have a waxstat type of thing like the 4A's do that give trouble - or a vacuum leak somewhere.

also look at replacing the condensor? its what i alwase forget lol

Auto chokes often play up and make it idle too fast.

Funny you mention auto chokes because this morning the auto choke wouldn't come on. I don't know what I did lol

hahah yeah - pretty much!

I did adjust what I thought was the idle screw. It seems to have helped - now it idles much lower, in fact it might be a bit too low now!

But the choke doesn't seem to come up dammit

I'll have to have a play tonight.

How does the auto choke work? How can I force it/trick it into thinking it needs the choke on?
