where to buy automotive bolts

Postby deaf_rattle » Tue Jul 07, 2009 4:43 pm

Well since my engine bay came out so well, i cant use my old bolts. :o
i am thinking about getting them coated/treated so they look new again, but figured i can probably buy new ones for a similar price.

Anywhere good in auckland to buy automotive bolts? or should i hit toyota up?

when you say automotive bolt you mean what?
stuff for in side the engien or out side to bling things up?

most bolts go by tensile strenght, i,e whats stamped on teh head of them

like
8.8
10.9 etc
then thread pitch, from the top of my head most things will be metric fine maybe 1.5pitch )

anyplaces like
EDL
Hardie fastners
fortress fastners etc are good
the more you by the cheaper it becomes

p.s
stainless steal cap screws rule

They may look like new, but half of them will probably shear off when you torque them up :( .

I gave up reusing bolts on my starlet as half of them had no strength and would shear off in the holes causing much annoyance

The only PTA thing with buying new bolts from engineering shops is the head sizes. They are usually 1mm or more bigger than factory, So no longer will you be able to pull 90% of your engine bay with a 10, 12, 14 and 17mm spanners/sockets. you will need 13, 15, 16, and 18 aswell.

And I agree, Stainless capscrew are the shizz, except they get rather expensive especially when you want metric fine threads. We sell all of it at work so if you want to PM me a list of what you want I can get you a good deal.

unless the old ones are rusted to shit, they would be fine to get re-coated
mate of mine does it for all his
he's a mega fussy bugger, rebuilt a few T50s and T diffs and always gets the bolts re-coated.
obviously if they are rusted or a torque to yield type then new would be a good idea. but i doubt you have any of those in your engine bay! excluding inside the engine of course.
just what bolts are you meaning exactly?

In my experience, its much the same price to get new bolts as it is to get them zinc coated. One takes a week, the other you can get straight away, so really depends how much of a rush you're in for them.

Bolts are expensive!
and nobody sold studs except chase exhaust components.

$20 for 6 studs and nuts (and that was a deal)
29.70 for 20 bolts and 20 spring washers.

Gah.

none of those are high load bolts, so be more then ok to use again
i'd just re-coat them, much easier than trying to source the right sizes and lengths in new ones.
unless you wanted the cap screw look.

WTF?! Do you tighten your 6mm bolts up with a 1/2" breaker bar or something?????

Pfft 1" with a 48" powerbar all the way.

I might have just been unlucky I guess. But if I was building a car to the standard Deaf is i'd probably go new anyways.

If the pricing is similar for new bolts and re-coating old ones. To me it seems a no brainer. But each to their own aye :)
