Painting my rollcage - how, and what with?

Basically looking at painting my rollcage, know what colour im after, but cant find it around.

Would the best way to paint it be to mask off the interior, remove seats etc and then let loose? I cant think of another way.

As for colour/what to use. Ive got a compressor and a spray gun, but would it be neccessary for something so thin and small? Spray can or gun?

As for paint - im after a metallic blue - similar to XR6 blue. Anyone got recommendations on where to get some mixed up? Ideas on how much id need?

paint it with a brush, that way you can get into all the hard to get bits (and there is lots of them).

Or are you determined to paint it with a spray gun and going to throw everyone else's advice out the window like last time???

No, ive got minimal experience painting things like this, have sprayed sideskirts and bumpers and crap and they came up ok - i was just wondering if it would be easier to mask the hell out of everything and overspray the shit out of it.

If i use a brush - when the paint dries, will it seem streaky?

id use a spray can, first brush the parts u cant get to.

Make you you mask up everything though, then just go for it.
oh rub the cage down with some scotch brite then some brake cleaner or something to remove grease.

I was thinking along those lines baz - its purely for looks, the cage is already painted and i dont like the ugly grey

Hammerite 'smooth' brush on will do the job.

You could probably use a piece of tree bark as a brush and it will still end up smooth, that stuff is awesome

I brushed the whole inside floor on my GTZ with smooth white and it came up really nice.

hey Neil/Gav, do you need to use primer before the hammerite or does it just brush on? Where is the best place to get it from? Union Hardware or just any hardware retailer ie Mitre 10?

Do i need to prime (already painted, just dislike the colour) and what sort of paint is it? Ie, will i be fine to paint it, and simply leave it to dry, what sort of temps is it ok to paint with?

Haha, sounds like we are both in the same stage of cage painting, You can buy a big bottle of prepsol from supercheap (Called wax and grease remover) for about $12 at the moment, to pre clean stuff

Just degrease it (remove the oil coating), lightly sand, and slap it on.

Mitre 10 is where I got mine. a 500ml can and I had just under 1/4 left.

ohh yeah, and my floor is hammerite also, but thats been sprayed on using a gun

POR15 is an other option
brush on and dries smooth. better anti rust too i think

Im after a satin or metallic finish - was thinking metallic but have seen some nice satins so im either way now.

The Por15 after some research appears to be a bit more expensive? Is it more or less chip proof? And does it touch up easy? I get it from a normal automotive paint store?

POR15 is hardy as, its not UV protected though. There are other products that are however. All their products up there with info sheets etc.

If u really want a mint looking job, get it power coated. It gets all the way around the bars and into places where spray or brush cant get.. We do it to all the V8's we build and always comes up mint. Just my 2 cents worth!!!

I'm in the same boat, I thought POR15 was for treating rust? I need some of that for around my windscreen
