its when you factor in the hassle of trying to get all the right lengths and sizes that re-coating starts to look good

If you've painted all of the engine bay without bolts in the holes, thickness of paint can make bolts harder to get in, new or otherwise.

Going around with a thread tap and cleaning up the holes can make things a bit easier in that regard, whether because of paint or old crud in there.

It definitely sucks having non standard sized heads compared to toyota bolts, easy enough to get a stack in the same size from pickapart or something if need be.

I might have just been unlucky I guess. But if I was building a car to the standard Deaf is i'd probably go new anyways.

If the pricing is similar for new bolts and re-coating old ones. To me it seems a no brainer. But each to their own aye :)

ive broken many a bolt as well, although i am quite possibly the worlds strongest man

you tighten it up and then think, hmm it should be a little bit tighter. snap.

probably going to go new, but looking into coating as well.

Could try these guys matt...we used to get out bolts for work for various cars and stuff when i was working in manukau...

The only thing i guess is they are in manukau.

They have the hex heads and also just the normal stuff as in the 10 mm bolts 12mm bolts etc etc

Hey - seriously think about going to pick a part and getting bolts off the newer cars...
oem automotive bolts have all the captive washers etc.
If you look carefully - especially in the interiors you will find bolts that look factory new!
I was pulling some bits off my 1984 carina parts car yesterday and a couple of bolts have never been touched for 25 years and looked mint!
I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!
