Windscreen leaks in a KP60

Postby molex » Tue Jul 14, 2009 3:02 pm

I'm in the process of tracking down and fixing all the various water leaks in a 1979 KP60 Bugeye, I've fixed a few (e.g around the taillights) but there's still an extraordinary amount of water making it through to the passengers footwell, keeping the carpet in a continuously wet state (not good)

After pouring a few buckets of water over the car it's become apparent it's actually leaking around the whole bottom edge of the windscreen rubber. The insulation against the firewall is soaked through on the left side of the passengers footwell which seems to slowly drip down and collect at floor level. Rubber is pretty rooted and looks original. I'm guessing the best way to go would be to pull the screen out, replace the rubber and reseal? Anybody got some hookups for somebody who can do the job/where to buy the parts? Any help much appreciated

check under the wiper motor for a gaping rust hole.......

or be prepared to find rust under the screen
best arrange for a mobile guy to come take it out so if it is rusty you can keep it out, fix it, and have him back later

if it is actually coming through the windscreen seal. i'd grab a new one (they aren't cheap though!) take the screen out yourself. just chop through the old seal with stanly knife or similar. saves risking breaking the screen. then most likely fix rust as revhead says. putting the screen back in isnt all that hard either. using the string/wire method.

have you checked for rust, where the water drains out from windcreen wipermotor area, to behind front guards?

Ditto, mine had big ass holes under the wiper motor. A real bitch to get at to cut out and weld. It also rusts at the very ends of that area that the wiper motor lives in, like around the hole where water goes out into the guard.
Taking the glass out yourself is easy, just use a BIG blunt flat head screwdriver to lift out the trim strip in the rubber seal and gently pull it out by hand. Be careful as it will be brittle(cause its old).
Then push the windscreen out from the inside with your feet. Try not to bend it too much, or it will crack, but it is surprisingly flexible!
Fix rust.
Get glass man to put it back in.

Checked extensively in all the areas mentioned, zero rust. The whole car is pretty good actually, had some repaired around the hatch recently but nothing else much. I've had a poke around the outside of the rubber with a screwdriver, haven't seen any bubbling or anything indicating anything under the surface. Entirety of the wiper tray seems solid.

The water was definitely coming THROUGH the rubber in several places along the bottom of the screen, forming little pools on the dash. I'm hopeful the major leak on the left side is also screen and not something I can't see/get to without removing the dash

Talked to the old man, turns out he has a contact who does mobile windscreen installs/removals, will give him a call tomorrow

Cheers all
