deep cycle battery

Postby deaf_rattle » Tue Jul 14, 2009 5:14 pm

My orbital battery went flat and i have had it on charge for the last couple of days. The battery charger always shows charging and the "charged" light hasnt come on.

Tested battery with multi meter and i got 11.93volts

is this ok? or is my battery on its way out?

To know for sure i'd get it checked out. 11.93v is a bit low. But even if it read 12.5 it could be stuffed still.

A multimeter wont tell you a whole lot about the battery's condition. Need to load test it, most battery shops will do it for nicks.

sounds like the battery needs a good wakeup, using a decent high amp, high power charger,

11.93 volts tells me your voltmeter or charger are faulty.

try to get your hands on a ctek charger - multi 7000 if possible

This is what i use to charge my oddyessy gel cell ..

the charger seems a bit weak , and may have issues cycling up a deep cycle battery like the one you have

On a side note, the new calcium batteries wont charge form the car if they get flat enough,

if you leave the lights on and flatten it, jump start it and drive the length of NZ, it wont be charged.
That is causing a lot of issue's.

I have the same charger and couple of orbital batteries (yellow top and red top), that charger will take forever to charge those batteries, best bet is to connect the battery to a running car with jumper leads (15 min perhaps), as the charger will only supply barely 2A. The charger is designed for shitty 25Ah batteries (NS40 and such), spiral cell batteries are a lot different in characteristics.

This is driving me crazy at the moment! I need a t-shirt with this info so I don't need to tell every customer the same story that they then don't agree with!

How much does your orbital battery weigh? If it is underweight then it is throw away time as it will never hold a charge properly.

We had to buy special battery chargers to do them.

They need to be removed from the vehicle and charged with a calcium charger at a much higher voltage than a normal car alternator puts out.
