Car cutting out

Postby method » Fri Jul 17, 2009 6:10 pm

I have a strange problem with my 4age turbo at the moment.

Every now and then, more often now than before, the car cuts out when i back off the throttle.

Say im at accelarating at 3/4 throttle and back off to only 1/2 throttle most cars would simply stop accelarating as quickly. My car sometimes will cut out for a second or two then power would come back on as 1/2 throttle as if i had gone from 3/4 throttle down to 0 throttle quickly then back up to 1/2 throttle. As you can imagine it gives you a bit of a jolt.

It also sounds as if i had fully backed off the throttle, the engine just cuts power for a second.

Car is a 4age turbo, running standard 4agze fuel pressure and a 4agze computer, CAS, ignition etc.

any ideas?

Thanks!

Could well be Mr Ozio.

Ill check and make sure its not pulling on any sensors. How would i check the TPS?
But it does it when i go from like 1/4 throttle to 1/5 throttle. So only light accelaration.

I just ran the diagnostics and it threw up 21 and 22.
21 is O2 sensor. I guess it is because i'm not running one.
22 is water sensor. Could this be affecting it? I know it has something to do with the fuel maps doesn't it.
Club 4AGE also lists vaccume sensor as a common problem when 21 is throwen up. 31 is vaccume sensor but its not throwing that up so i guess it is ok?

Car runs fine apart from this stuttering.

I would be checking the TPS first. Get a multimeter and feeler gauges and check the resistence at certain throttle, the specs are in the FAQs on here.

Water sensor just tells the ECU what temp the engine is, wouldn't think it should cause a stuttering as severe as what you describe, but worth checking out if the TPS doesn't come up faulty.

Yip check the tps, someone else on here had a similar problem with their ae101 s/c and that was a tps fault. That particular one on closer inspection turned out to have water inside the tps

The water sensor effects the fuel if its open circuit it will run quite rich, its a negative temp coefficent so as temp rises resistance decreases so put it in a pot and warm the water up and use a multimeter and check the resistance
code 21 could be from the 22 code been output

Cool thanks a lot for the help guys. Will put new water temp sensor in tomorrow and report back with if it worked or not.

Have checked TPS and made sure it is adjusted right. Seems to be all ok.
