To a point. Not for long periods of time. Just gives the ability to spin one wheel faster than the other. divides the power between the two unless the are locked (LOL)

well, if you actually look at the diff in question..... the spider gear on one side ( cant remember which one sorry ) is very worn, from lack of lubrication.
my guess is, perhaps its started spinning and to get out of being stuck its been kept spinning hoping for grip. now that one axles all good and spinning it'll be firing all the oil out of the housing and down towards the hub, leaving the spider gear to run dry.

now yes i agree the job of the spider gears is to allow one wheel to travel at a different speed then the other, when cornering! so speed difference is less then 10kmh -ish. not 30kph+

and also just for a laugh, when we had customers complaining about how their brand new 4wd hilux wasnt that good off road and they liked their old ones better. toyotas response was " well, you brought the wrong vehicle. you should have got a landcruiser "
