Auto to Manual for GT (ST215 3SGE)

Postby dakine » Sun Jun 21, 2009 12:39 pm

I can't seem to see many GT caldina's that are manual, but I was wanting to do it to mine and was wondering if there is a manual gearbox for the GT or if it fits the GTT manual trans, if so, what ECU would I use? would a GTT manual ECU work?

Has anyone done a auto to manual conversion on either a GT or GTT?? any gotchas?

Thanks,
Mark

no st215g gt's came out in manual

I have been thinking of doing this to ours, but haven't looked to much into it as only the mrs drives it and I have too many projects on the go.

A GTT trans will bolt but but be prepared to pay through the teeth for one. I am not sure if a GTT trans requires GTT driveshafts and diffs or if the ones from the GT auto are plug'n'play.

The other thing would be to look at a 2.0G manual as some of them were also 4wd, or an ST195 caldina manual box.

As for ECU I have a feeling the auto boxes have their own ecu on these, someone may correct me on this though.
Hopefully its just a matter of tricking the ecu into thinking its in neutral or park.

I would have though ratios would be all out for an NA using the GT-T box. As for ECU, yeah no way you would use a turbo ecu on an NA.....

ST195 box would be the way to go I would have thought. I some how doubt this project would be as easy as thought.

the auto box isnt too bad as it is anyway, these vehicles were designed for a particular purpose and the auto suits it pretty well. its pretty flexible if you use the PWR button and lock it into the particular gear you want.
although it does hamper the awesome engine a bit, especially from a standing start.

Would have thought you'd have an issue with a 4WD box going into a fronter? Maybe not...

That would be right, except the GT's are 4WD

Go for a TZ-G ST195 manual box - E56?, I think the 2.0G and GTT mounts are slightly different.

To drag up an old thread but there seems to be a few people that are having thoughts bout this...

My auto box is getting somewhat clunky (despite a recent trans flush, not like its been given death but is up in the km's) So to bolt up a manual box to a beams 3SGE is it practical to just use a FWD box from a celica or will a 4WD fit from... god knows, I would assume the ratios aren't too well suited if I were to use a GT-T trans? Any ideas on ECU issues? (Auto to Manual)

All good on the ECU front!

Dont need to change or bodge anything at all.

Only issue is the kill switch type thing which stops you from starting the car if not in park or neutral, but that's not an issue specific to the ECU.

Thats sounds fairly simple then as far as that goes, just bridge a terminal or something. Any ideas for a FWD box.. do the earlier 3S-GE boxes (ST18X celica etc) mount up? This would mean changing the rear subframe to a FWD setup?

So the car is currently 4WD? What about an ST195 Caldina TZ-G manual box? God knows where you would find one.

I can see it being more hassle than its worth changing it to FWD, on top of the why?

TZ/G would be my pick, thats what I am looking for anyway
