Battery Issues - Exide Orbital Blue - Deaded?

Postby MrOizo » Sat Jul 25, 2009 10:14 pm

I came back from being away for a week to get a WOF in my supra.
Went to take it friday morning and no power at all.

Managed to jump start it and ran fine. thought i would turn it off after 15 minutes warm up to see if it would start again and no luck.

I have a Orbital Blue i bought and was awesome for the 6 months its been in the car.

I had it on the charge for 2 hours and nothing (5v?:O)

Is this battery just dead?

If so, where is a better place to get one? (Sealed, for the boot)

i have had problems with my orbital battery, but i think its just the charger that is at fault.
Try another charger if you can.

if the battery is really flat, 15 mins wont do much in the way of charging.

If it has gone flat chances are you need a specific type of charger to get a charge back into it.

I got me a charger from SuperCheap. Said it was suitable for charging deep cycle batteries.

I thought 2 hours would have seem some improvements but nothing - think it might have made it worse!

Where would i find a special charger or take it to have charged? Auto Sparkie?

Thanks guys

Got a century/exide batteries depot nearby?
My local one is very helpful.

not one of those new fancy types of battery that need a special charger, and wont charge from a car if its too dead?

Those fancy batteries are rubbish.
Cars need car batteries, the real thing.

its probably a calcium battery, in which case you do need a special charger. however if put it on a trickle charge ( like 3 amps or less ) for a couple of days it'll come right.

wtf. orbital is a proper car battery. if you done your research you'd know this.

drain almost any battery to nothing at will do the same thing.

They need a slow charge, that's why you buy a special charger, it's on the specs.

Put it into a car with a 100 amp alternator, it charges too fast, overheats and it's toast.

They're for race cars only with a low output alternator. The importers might end up going broke with warranty claims.

so you saying mine should have been toast 2-3 years ago, when i installed it in my car?

go get one of your "real thing" batteries. discharge the shit out of it, it wont like it 1 bit either

Doubt he'll find any as that really only applies to Gel Cells. The Orbital Blue is a "Valve Regulated Lead-Acid" (VRLA) that uses "Absorbed Glass Mats"(AGM) and is designed for high charge currents.

Unlike sealed Gel Cells VRLA batteries don't suffer from gas build up that can damage the cell and AGM is a lot more robust than Gel technology.

I know for sure you need lots of current to bring them back to live, I have 3 Orbitals, fairly used, and they were "dead" when I picked them up from compliance centre dump. I brought them back to live with some long charging and they still function to this day (apart from one, that had a crack and gel started to leak out).

New micro processor controlled chargers suitable for calcium cell batteries dont flick onto a "full" charge if the battery is under a certain voltage. Best bet is to get an oldschool highish amp charger that charges at full amps no matter what and give it a burst with that. Once its up to a decent voltage (11-12v) then the charger youve got will charge it up all good.

i've watched a couple of orbitals die with the audio boys over the years. If teh float charge still isn't raising above the rest voltage then its dead as a dodo.

One friends battery wouldn't raise above 7V, another wouldn't raise above 10V. Both attempts used intelli chargers with hard and cyclic charging and standard charging. I also attempted to use a standard 5A charger.. no go.
Both attempts were for charging periods of 72 hours and longer.

Sergei, I'd like to know what you did to "rescue" your batteries. Duration of charging and what charger.

If its dead, its normally dead. Note, these guys used the batteries on their sides. Orbitals don't seem to like sitting on their sides for long periods without the car being uesd.

If you don't use your car, then take the battery off. I've killed a lead acid to 0V just by not using the car for a couple of months.

If you really don't want a dead battery, I have 6x 2V cells for a forklift in the garage that I've used for SPL. Only weighs 120kg in total  Let me know if you are interested :D

I charged them with an old school charger at 12A, for a day (they were at ~10.5V when I picked them up), then took them home and left them for a week on el-cheapo 2.4A charger.
I did each separately of course.
