Holy hell, what a qualifying session that was.

Massa got a smack in the head by some debris on the track and went smack into a wall :?

He's alright but the car is pretty banged up!

And someone stuffed up along the lines, just as Q3 was finishing, all the lap times disappeared off the screen
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

far out he travelled a fair way before hitting the tyres, very lucky

Also lucky he foot came off the pedal I guess as the car slowed a bit, may have been even worse if he hit the tyres at full tit

Open wheelers have always been dangerous series to compete in as you have very limited head protection ie: helmet.

He didnt have any steering movement coming into the left hander, he didnt try to steer into the corner. First when i watched it, it did look like he was down shifting with his left hand. But watching it again I am not too sure maybe his hand was just flapping unconciously. To me it also seemed he hit his head twice, once by the spring off Ruben's car and then when he crashed into the tyre wall, it looked like his head has hit the tyres of the tyrewall as well.

I dont think FIA can do much to make it safer being open wheelers. Very tragic accident, I hope he will make a full recovery.

F1 cars will downshift themselves when revs drop past a certain point so that's what was happening there

that's a bit weird, as its saying he is applying full brakes. and he definitely isn't. he probably semi conscious and not really with it.... understandably so! he makes no effort to turn or lift off, i wonder if relaxed legs is enough to apply 75% of brakes and keep throttle on

when i first saw it i didn't see anything hit him, took a couple of takes before i "thought" i saw something then you see the slo mo and wow! now i know what to look for I can see it hit him :?

It looks to me like the bumps are shaking him just enough to make him put some pressure on the brakes. It certainly looked to me like, the tires were being pulse braked towards the end. Unless that is something that is programmed into them to do, or can be done remotely by one of the engineers?

no, any control from pit to car is banned.

it maybe that the throttle on was out powering the brakes.

doesnt really matter, was a scary incident but looks like he will be ok. may miss a coupla races though

Ouch that's gotta hurt!!!

I guess he's lucky it hit him side on, if it had been end on there would've been a lot more concentrated force.

Has anyone seen the photo of massa still wearing his helmet after being hit? It's pretty scary how if it had been a few cm's lower, it would have been game over completely, I dont know if I should post it or not, its not very nice at all. :?

end on it would have sprung and bounced off wouldn't it? lol
doubt it.

anyway, cant tell on the youtube clip ( well i couldn't)
but on the news clip tonight you could definatly hear the car still revving
well after it had stopped moving in the wall,
so my guess would be that he was probably slumped on both pedals,
as i'd say it would take more than a bit of pressure on the brake pedal
to stop the car with the throttle still on.

While it's nice to see an improvement in McLaren's form I'm not sure they will continue to put in such impressive performances for the rest of the season. I suspect it was more due to the nature of the track than any giant leap forward on their part.

Bet the organisers of the Euro GP in Valencia are pissed off at having their star attraction banned from the GP. Still Alonso should have known better than to press on with a wheel coming loose, his race was done, better to safely retire than to endanger the other drivers, marshalls ans spectators by losing a wheel.
