correct, they usually run with the centre diff open, and at the puch of a switch a vacuum engagement unit can lock the centre diff.
Parts are OK to come by, not many parts are 4wd specific - rear hubs, struts, front axles, east/west front subframe, rear subframe etc, however they share most of those 4wd components with the AE115 Carib and there is HEAPS of them around.
PS - thats a pretty reasonable price considering a tail light will only set you back $65
