swapping cam gear on an aw11

Postby soven » Wed Jul 29, 2009 4:06 pm

Trying to swap out the cam gears on a 4agze aw11 but I have run into some problem

I removed upper timing belt cover. Turned crank pulley to TDC.

The problem I have is I can't find the two lower bolts to remove the middle timing belt cover. Therefore I can't access the tensioner.

Do I need to take out the alternator belt and crank pulley? Car is also equipped with aircon if that makes a diff.

yes need to remove belts
now is a good time to replace them

i never really had an issue with mine.... for the s/c belt tensioner i found going in the side with a ratchet the best way.

Changing the cam gears from adjustable back to stock. The adjustables were setup with a degree wheel etc.(not by me) but it was not running well. Too much hassle to mess around with it considering it is just a 4agze with bluetop cams.

Removed water pump pulley. removed all four bolts for the middle timing belt cover.I still cant remove the middle timing belt cover as the timing belt idler pulley has a pointer sticking out through a hole on the middle cover.

Tried removing 14mm bolt for the alternator belt tensioner but it just wont budge. Going to tackle it again tomorrow.

Why not just set the adjustables back to factory position?

No markings on it, no idea where factory position is.

cams were originally set up to 100 degrees on both ex and in cams, also tried them at 106 but didnt perform as well. a few guys i talked to from the states reckoned that 100 was the way to go on standard cams.
gears have no markings, they were made by someone on chch i think. so you can only set them up with a dti and degree wheel.

IIRC the pointer is removeable, you just put a 10 or 12 round the base of it.

all done. Had to remove crank pulley etc to remove the timing belt covers.

the 14mm alternator belt tensioner bolt came off by removing the grip of the powerbuilt ratchet and slotting a small diameter jack handle over it as a breaker bar.

What a pain~
