Custom radiator support legality?

Postby iOnic » Fri Jul 31, 2009 2:24 pm

My radiator support is a bit rusty and won't really work with the angle I want the radiator to be.....Am I legally allowed to cut it out and replace it with a section of tube? I'm referring to the lower support in this picture (the thing that the radiator is sitting on).

And this is what I'm hoping to do

I don't mind getting a cert for it. The car needs to be re-certed for various things that have changed anyway.

Did that to my car, make sure you get a certified welder to do the job.
Also I suggest using chromolly roll cage tube and making gussets as well.

Heres is a pic of mine, I havent got it certed, IH8TEC got the same thing done and his is certed. Basaically I dont use my car on the road much at all.

That's exactly what I wanted to know :) Cheers mate. I'm a certified and ticketed welder so that side of things is easy :D

just a side question about something similar, i'm looking at having to change my bumper on my supra, which has an iron bumper support behind it. anyone know the legalities of changing this from the stock bumper iron to a ali crash bar from a aristo front cut we have spare, which is lighter and easier to work with? would i have to get this certed as it's not actually welded to the body of the car, can just all be unbolted with two bolts.

technically by the letter of the law any mod like those above have to be certed, and can be refused on the grounds of altering the crash structure of the car.
so, talk to the guy who is doing the certifying. or at the least your WOF's.

Any particular reason aside from weight? I'm not really too bothered about weight - the front of an MR2 is hardly a heavy area.
