ae101 rebulid.. ideas/ comments

Postby Lurkin » Thu Jul 30, 2009 4:23 pm

Have had an ae101 Levin (20v silvertop 4age, 5 spd box) for about the last 9 months.. but have been thinking about rebuilding/ getting rebuilt the gearbox (worn syncros etc) and rebuilding the engine.. i.e. seals, gaskets, perhaps rings etc. (any ideas on how much this would cost roughly? - just to make a rough budget)

BUT - I'm new to this... I've taken apart and put back together a 1300 escort engine - but that was ages ago, and there would have been less to it.

So I was thinking perhaps buying a spare engine and box and rebuilding them instead so I can take my time (potter about and do it properly)- and install them once their finished.

Naturally, the moment g/box rebuilding is mentioned I get a funny look.

Really just looking for some advice:

- is getting the spares worth bothering with? Or better to go at the car itself?
- is rebuilding a g/box well out of my league i.e. should get it rebuilt by a professional instead?
- any idea of the costs involved in a rebulid ...

It may sound way to ambitious BUT every time I get someone else to do something it both costs money and more importantly I learn nothing in the process, and trust my own work more than I trust others.

ideas, thoughts comments?

a gearbox rebuild could be very costly. There are many MANY 20Vs around and you could pick up a 2nd hand gearbox for much less. Given that it will obviously be new and possibly in an unknown condition but its always a money saving option . . .

Not sure about the C52's, but some gearboxes need some special tools to be able to strip them down correctly (ultra long sockets etc). I'd recommend getting a couple of busted ones off TM and ripping them to bits to get an idea of how they go together before dismantling your current one.
Gearbox will likely set you back a few hundred dollars in parts, just depending on how many synchros you replace and if there are any other damaged bits. Motor rebuild is relatively cheap, if you can get trade price on bits..gasket set, rings and bearings shouldnt set you back more than a grand.

well, rebuilding will prob still cost more
BUT, you can spread the cost out
and as you point out, you can learn

If you place a lot of value on learning (and its a damn good feeling when it works!) then there is your answer.

if your goal is to get a car running the cheapest and fastest way then, yeah 2nd hand engine and box and away you go in a weekend.

hmm yep

thinking I'll go have a looksee a pick a fart this weekend... for a g/box as there was a least one manual out there last time.. pricing seems to be around $100 - 120 depending on how you figure their price chart works out...

we'll see. the challenge I guess is wheather a virtual layman can figure out a good buy from a crap one. guess the rule of thumb is whether it feels worse for movement in the car before I pinch it out (than the one in mine)...

no doubt there will be more questions to come.. any ideas of what the gearbox actually weighs roughly? what sort of things I should be looking for in terms of faults with the g/boxs?

Where are you? I have what I believe to be a C56 in the shed that I'd let go for $80.

Plus to rebuild a gearbox, you'd more than likely need a press too.

I got a AE82 GT C52 rebuit. Cost 900 included hydraulics being replaced by miles udy. I got sick of buying half stuffed gearboxed from wreckers.

Kms travelled doesn't equal to the condtion of a gearbox.
