Ae101 levin rear hub

Postby Lurkin » Thu Aug 06, 2009 9:49 am

How do I know when a rear hub is on the way out?/ how can I tell if a second hand one is still good?

are the rear hubs the same on super strut + non super strut?

eh hub and bearing technically I guess. ie thing chuck of metal behind the brake rotor that holds the bearing IN it. (was just referred to as a hub on the warrant sheet? I think I'm looking at the right piece?)

the hubs themseleves dont really wear, it'll be the wheel bearing, hubs only really get damaged in accidents.

You can replace the whel bearing inside the hub (I haven't done a rear one myself).

It'll be a matter of removing the whole hub, and taking it to somewhere (or a mate) with a press, and pressing the old one out and the new one in.

You can tell they are gone by, jacking it up and rotating the wheel quickly, if you hear a rumble or feel a vibration in the hub/ bottom of the strut/ somewhere you can hold around that area. Or checking the play side to side and top to bottom by holding the wheel and trying to turn it/ shake it

Or if you ignore a shagged wheel bearing for too long

guess I'm being abit lazy relying on the mechanic..

ive already bought a replacement hub with a wheel bearing already in it =- but it was off a super strut model (it was from pick a part, cheap as chips)..

was hoping to avoid taking it all apart and finding it doesnt fit. I wouldnt be surprised if it was a hub, as the front one on the same side needed doing when I first bought the car...

Does the 'play' differ if its a rooted hub as opposed to just a rooted wheel bearing? (its also not making any noise like buggered wheel bearings do)

superstrut is only different front suspension components, so yes, a rear hub off a superstrut car will fit a non superstrut

differences superstrut to non superstrut...
Superstrut always has ABS so the hub will have the ABS sensor wheel pressed into the back of the axle.

You can't change the wheel bearing if it has ABS sensor as the sensor wheel will snap off when you try to remove it.

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

actually using official toyota terminology the hub is the bit that sits in the bearing and spins that you bolt the wheel to :P
which do get damaged if a bearing is run too long when worn

the only difference in those rear hubs is disc and drum type, the disc type hub has a slightly larger mating face from memory. you can swap one way but not the other

I got a rear wheel bearing tightened up as it failed a WOF on play. That was probably 3 years ago and its been going sweet since 8)

"Touch wood"

I am not saying this is the correct method, nor a good method to use. But it fixed my problem.
