None of my cars are built for go (most don't even go) but I prefer the look of a moderately modified car over stock anyday*. I don't think by adding lower / stiffer springs (cobras) I have sacrificed much. If I was worried about clearance i'd drive a hilux.

I don't see how you group it all to a social niche, when really it often comes down to personal preferences, not everyone enjoys playing follow the leader.
*This excludes oldschool cars which can actually look quite good standard. Some newer cars can look ok 100% stock.
