Random Nissan Tacho Problem

Postby Boosted_162 » Sat Aug 15, 2009 11:21 pm

Hey,
This isnt a toyota tech problem, but someone on here might know. My brother-in-law has a 1996 U14 Bluebird with a SR20DE and manual box. Problem is, the tach doesnt work. 95% of the time it sits at max, while occasionally it works, but is rather frantic and waves around.

Anyone have any hints on where to start looking? Hes in electronics so pretty competent with soldering etc, but we dont know where to start looking!

Cheers for any help :)

The tacho itself is the problem.

Nissan ones are shit and it's a common as problem.

Pull it out, pull it apart,
and there is a potentiometer on the board.

Mark where it is, then screw it back and forth from max to min heaps of times to wipe the contacts inside it across each other and scratch the surface.

Turn it back to where it was set originally and try it.

Other thing is do a complete re-solder on the board,

Or get a new/second hand one.

And if the speedo has a similar setup do the same to that as well. The bluebird i had did the same thing but didn't worry about it to much, then the speedo started droping out completely so the cruise control would drop out - and when they were both out which happened occasionally i had only a very rough idea how fast i was actually going :?

Well we did it this morning (quite early ) and went for a drive but its still playing up :(. After hitting it abit its kind of working, but its reading wrong and it moves around, when the engine speed clearly isnt.

Speedo is working fine (at the moment )

Plan now is to find a tacho unit from another U14 or a P11 (looks identical afaik) and swap it over to see if theres a change,
