Van registered as "light goods"

Postby cat007 » Mon Aug 17, 2009 11:02 am

My Hiace rego is about to run out soon - and 12 months is worth $247!

Is that normal? It's been so long since I've registered anything for 12 months - I cant remember what it should cost.

It's registered as "light goods" - previous owner did that. I'm not sure if that's the best way?

It's only going to be used a few times a week - if that. Mainly its a campervan....

Rego costs went up 1st of July to cover increased ACC levies. You think $247 is bad, registering my Diesel van is going to cost $372 for 12 months

Roads in NZ are fine. Completely safe and all.
Drivers in NZ are horribly incompetent. Hence the accident rate.

we're not a 3rd world country

I've just come back from an 8 day trip around east cape

other than the BEAUTIFUL countryside - the roads weren't all that bad. Although I was in a van - in my supra I would've smashed the cross member and exhaust over and over and probably cried many times

so no - the roads in NZ are NOT fine

If I wasn't feeling so sick I'd go grab my camera and take some photos of the roads where I live to prove you wrong. Roads down here certainly AREN'T safe, I've had a tyre torn to shreds by an all but unavoidable pothole before. Not safe at all.

are you haveing a laugh ? sure stupid people kill people but if there was a decent 2/4 lane motor way the whole length of the couyntry they would cut the accident rate in half, at least a decent barrier between the two sides at the very least,

i am a good drive, very competent, a few weeks back coming home, State highway one, the main route between auckland and whangarei i hit a pot hole, smashed my wheel to peices, is that my fault when i could have gone into the other lane at 100 km and had a head on crash ? if i had been on a motorbike i would be dead , i have been in my dads landcruiser and have gone oversome of the roads and i tell you i dont know how even that stands up to some of the punishment,

That wouldn't help all that much

Although a girl at work here is in hospital from some idiot who was going a bit too fast and hit some gravel on the side of the road, oversteered and hit her pretty much head on

Sure he was speeding - but he only spun out because there was loose gravel on the side of the road, i.e. no curb or finishing edge

yes it would, it would mean we wouldnt have to wait until a poxy 2 second passing lane if we were following some moron doing 70 on a main highway, or a truck, etc and every one needing to try and rush to get passed them,

we would be able to just pass them at out convenience

Such an arrogant assumption
I have been almost every where, from Cape Reigna to Mount Cook (and from Mt Manganui to Mt Wanganui and so on).
Compared to some other countries I have been NZ roads are excellent.

I have been in eastern Australia (done about 5000km in a rental) and roads there are slightly worse than in NZ.

NZ roads are very safe, if you hit pothole and your wheel fall in pieces - perhaps your wheels/tyres where not road worthy? I mean I see a lot of people riding on chinese wheels with 35-40 profile tyres and expect good ride on open road, perhaps they should stick to OEM? Also wheel falling in pieces from a pot hole might suggest that the wheel was of questionable quality. Was your suspension lowered?

 Possibly, but it doesn't seem like I'm the only one to disagree with you.

Which countries in particular?? I'd agree there are places with a lot worse roading than ours, but the majority of developed countries I've been to have been better, especially arterial routes. And Drivers are incompetent worldwide.

Few month ago I did all that back way to Welsford a few times, nothing wrong with that piece, unless they pulled off all the seal in that time period.

I must admit that there are potholes (not bad nothing an average car doing speed limit can't handle), but hey you guys complain because you don't know what is a bad road.
Try Eastern Europe for start.

Did a trip up to Taupo in corolla friday/saturday. With 205/40/17's and firm suspension it wasn't near as bad as i expected in terms of pot holes big bumps etc. But there was a fair bit of standing water which wasn't draining away :? which was of concern.

There is alot of surface changes and parts which have been dug up / resealed around here which are a real pain.
