3sgte not idling properly

Postby thirdkid » Mon Aug 17, 2009 8:41 pm

Posting in behalf and sorry if repost

My mate has a mr2 with a 3sgte engine. It starts but wont idle and he can rev it up to 2000rpm and itll run but if the revs go below that the engine dies.

The mods hes done are free flow s/s extractors, intercooler, aftermarket downpipe and exhaust, 8mm leads. The problem started when he replaced the extractors, down pipe, and intercooler.

Could it be a vacuum leak? And what should be checked?

hmm, when the car was bought one of plugs was pretty much drowned in oil. But has been fixed and the plugs were changed also.

Which model SW20?

If it's the AFM version (pre Oct '93), then several things could be wrong, but Vacuum/Boost leaks would be high on the list, as would a fault in the AFM wiring.

yeah 2nd gen sw20. We are going to redo intercooler piping and extractors. Also it could be the airflow meter right? Because this was replaced before

AFM would be a good bet on this one, is the computer spitting out a check light?? On one of the Gen 2's Ive had, it did exactly this, changed AFM and ran perfect. Would definitely look for I/C plumbing leaks though also.
