Stupid gear knob fitting question

ok, this is crazy, and I can't believe I'm having to ask this question.....

Just bought a new TRD gear knob for the ST205 to replace the dodgy piece of junk that was installed by the previous owner. It screws on fine, looks and feels great, however......

How do I connect the leather boot to the knob to stop it falling down?

The boot has a plastic ring at the top that is internally threaded and is (I assume) stock, the old knob was an after-market POS and didn't have any way of attaching the ring to the knob, and stupidly I assumed that the genuine toyota part would.....

Any suggestions on how this all supposed to fit together?

The OEM ring is not threaded. It will sit at the edge of the thread where the knob will be pushing down on it. The threat should be skinnier than the rod, and the diameter of the hole on the ring should be smaller than the rod. Unless your rod was shortened via hacksaw.

Ok, well the white plastic ring at the top of the leather boot is about double the diameter of the rod, and is definitely internally threaded so it must be aftermarket.

Interestingly the way you describe it fitting together would not work with the TRD knob I have just bought as its quite tall and the rod slides into it about an inch before screwing on, which would force the OEM ring down well below the bottom of the thread on the rod.

Also as far as I can tell the rod is OEM and has certainly not been attacked with a hacksaw.

Now, does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
