Brilliant Government ideas again
So it turns out that just lowering speed limits and having more cameras isn't working to lower our road toll any more. So what new plan has the government come up with? Lower speed limits more! Somehow they seem to be getting away with their circular logic of: when road tolls go down its because of speed regulation, when they don't go down we need to lower speeds even more. There's no causation here! Man it annoys me that they get away with this crap. In 2020 everyone will be driving road in their ESP, ABS, TC equiped car with a NCAP 5 star or higher rating at 70k on the open road and 30 in the city. Its a friggen joke.
End rant

Oh yeah, and lower the blood alcohol limit more, cause the limit now is clearly the problem with the recidivist drink drivers
Honestly, not much thought goes into these proposals I'm sure.

Finally looks as if one of the knee jerk reactions has been so big knee'd themselves in the head and lost all common sense.

Trust me some of the people I know who now work for NZTA, aren't the sort of people you'd actually want working there. They think cars are evil & we should all walk/cycle/take the bus/take the train everywhere. Think Green party on speed & you get the idea.
It bureaucracy gone mad. I noticed speed cameras aren't called that any more, they're called road safety cameras. What a euphemism! Call them what they are, road revenue gathering cameras.

Yeah, the raising of the driving age, that has potential. Probably wont fix the youth accident statistics, but it'll stop those damn kids driving on my lawn!

I dont think its the driving age that is the problem but the process you take to get it. Getting my license was so easy it was a joke.
How is driving with your parants for 6 months going to teach you to drive it certainly didnt teach me much maybe the give way rule thats about it.
They need some form of driving programe that you must do and do well to get your restricted, where you do one of those driving courses with them skid car things unsure of the name.
The defensive driving course is a joke all i did was watch a few boring videos ask the tutor for the answers pass and than bang have six months of the time it takes to get your full.
I also think every say 10 years you must update your licence and do the driving course, theres so many older people out there that cant drive for shit!!

yeah I'm all for professional lessons, my mum still swears I'm wrong about the indicating at roundabouts, even though its been pointed out to her by numerous people & newspaper articles/road code examples.
I seriously worry about her driving, though not as much as my late granddad who was a serious worry on the road & towed a 25ft caravan till 2 yrs before his death due to alzhimers, and had numerous crashes in the year before he went into a home, but yet passed his medical (at the surprise of all the family)

Want to make roads safer?
Fine people for going to slow,
you know, the ones you come across doing 60K in a 100K zone with 40 cars lined up behind them.
Make the open road limit 100K for all vehicles towing or not.
If everyone is goping at the same speed there should be no need to pass.
and make people stop giving way when they shouldn't,
that really pisses me off as you expect them to go around the corner,
but the just stop in the middle of the road,

what? why? i would say make more training compulsary!
though id would also have to me practical training as well
I agree. Too many people out there are just oblivious to other drivers, and don't switch on their brains before they switch on their cars!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I actually found the course useful.
I think it should be a part of driver training, though. Along with some improved practical.

The government is trying to cut costs in the public service. So those employed are getting into panic mode and trying to make themselves look useful.
IRD have just got rid of 300 plus staff some of them were dead wood and above retirement age, put their hands up for volantry(sp?) redundancy and got paid out.

my personal opinion on how to help fix problems:
minimum driving age 16
very strict rules etc for learners and restricted
minimum number of hours/kms before graduation, including proper defensive driving and lessons (including a variety of vehicles and road conditions)
harder tests, theory and practical
higher cost of getting licence
really harsh penalties for breaching licence conditions
re-sitting licence every 10 years
under 20, maybe up to 25, zero blood alcohol no matter what licence you have, also anybody older on restricted and learner licences
leave existing 400mccg or whatever it is as is for older drivers with full licence
no changing speed limits - they are fine as is (30-40kph past schools maybe)
more undercover cops policing speed in roadworks into/out of towns and past schools
make some holding up traffic/driving like an asshat rules
compulsory 3rd party insurance (with harsh penalties, and also regulated by govt so that insurance co's dont make it stupidly expensive)
cc ratings/turbo limitations or classes for younger/learner/restricted drivers
people that are repeat offenders are banned from driving permanently (ie drink driving etc)
