5efte not turning over

Postby sik_gt_starly » Wed Aug 19, 2009 12:42 pm

am having a bit of trouble finding out whats wrong with my gt starlet

running a 5efhe with 4efte manifolds, starter motor, sump etc, lightened 3ete flywheel to mate 4efte clutch and gearbox to 5e.

motor was turning over when i had it hanging on engine crane in shed with a socket on crank approx 2 months ago and have not done anything except putting clutch, gearbox & starter on

now its in starlet with gearbox & clutch & starter motor on it will not turn over, not even with massive powerbar on crank or turning key (new battery and all)

thought starter may be jammed but took that off and still cannot turn motor over with powerbar on crank.

any ideas as to what could be wrong or what i have installed wrong.

anyone had something similar happen?

cheers

forgot to add, gearbox appears to be working fine, when in neutral can roll car, when in gear car will not roll (only used as backup handbrake)

Are you sure clutch clears the gearbox? It might be hard against the bellhousing, ribs or some other parts inside the bellhousing.
Have you tried to turn over when just flywheel was on?

turned over fine when flywheel, clutch and pressure plate were on the motor hanging on engine crane

not sure if clutch clears the gearbox, i assume it does as many others have used the same flywheel & clutch setup i have. (how would i tell this)

however i upgraded standard 4efte clutch plate to aftermarket clutch plate which visually looked the same.

clutch has not been bled yet either

cheers

Does it have at least little bit movement or it is completely jammed?

Try undoing gearbox bolts so you could pry slightly gearbox off the engine (1cm should be enough) if you run out of ideas, and see if that frees it up.

appears to be completly jammed, i thought maybe there was a bit of compression in motor stopping things turning over so took plugs out and still the same, clockwise no movement at all, anti clockwise starts to take bolt off crank.

i tried putting basically all my weight 90ish kg on powerbar to turn over on a maybe 40cm powerbar and wouldnt budge at all

sounds like the flywheel was not put in properly or you left something in there :P

is quite possibly something ive missed or put on wrong, this is first time ive swapped an engine over so is all new to me, thats life i guess.

had a mechanic mate help me put flywheel clutch & gearbox on so should have been sweet

looks like its going to have to be a take gearbox off mission and find out whats going on :(

I agree with sergei, try loosening bolts while in car and pry a gap between engine and box and see if it will turn over then.

I had a similar problem with my fxgt, bolted what i thought looked like a similar pressure plate but it was 10 or 15mm higher then the 4age one i had in it. I replaced the pressure plate cause it was stuffed in the fingers thanks to a broken release bearing. Turns out the pressure plate was jammed against the bellhousing so it could possibly be a clearance issue with your pressure plate rubbing or jamming on the bellhousing of the box

your dead right, took gearbox off today, was a faint mark around inside of bellhousing where it was pressed up against pressure plate.

compared standard 4efte pressure plate with my aftermarket one and was a couple mm differences in places but was causing the problem

it has been suggested i get flywheel skimmed a couple mm each side to make it fit fine

this sound like itl solve the problem?

cheers

a couple of mm off flywheel does not sounds like a good idea to me. :?

who suggested that?

you would be better (in all seriousness) to take a grinder to the bellhousing where its binding

or try find a better p/plate

yeah paul do this, if its binding on the pressure plate its no point skimming the flywheel. grinding bellhousings to fit bigger pressure plates is pretty common  plenty of meat in them.

Machining the flywheel that much is asking for trouble, I dont remember the link but there is a good video of a mustang with a "lightened" flywheel exploding though the bonnet :?

Yea, you need to be careful with rotating mass and balance.

Just think of how a couple of grams on your 10kg wheel can make all the difference in the wheel shaking at speed.
