Changing Vehicle ownership

Postby DXROLLA » Thu Aug 20, 2009 7:05 pm

Does the owner of the vehicle have to sign anything when changing ownership? Or do i just have to fill out a form as the buyer?

As long as the buyer does their bit then thats the important one. There is one for the seller, but once the buyers side is done then its through the system as being theirs

FWIW, the old owner doesn't need to do anything if they dont want.

You can change it into your name with your drivers liscence and some money without them doing anything, ( or knowing about it)

So true

At the end of the day, his GF has to do the change of ownership if its her car, its in her best interest to do so otherwise shes liable for all fines etc.

Write up a note saying I [insert her name here] confirm the sale of my [insert car here] to [insert your name here] on [the date here].

Both sign it or something.

I'm no lawyer, but if you wanted to cover yourself, this might help.

Dont even need to do that.

walk in with the rego number written on the back of your hand,
and some money, and you own it when you leave.

Dont even need to know who the old owner is/was.

Yeah I know thats how it works, just giving him options to cover himself which is what hes worried about.

Pretty stupid system really.

When I have sold cars, I got a letter from ltnz/ltsa saying that my car has had the ownership changed. So you can be all like "WTF!? I didn't sell my car" Or you ignore the letter if the change of ownership was legit.

Reminds me of the time my KP starlet somehow got itself a WOF yet it hadn't left my garden. Was tempted to go for a spin, being 'legit' and all  All I did was put the plate into carjam to check when reg was up and it said it had a new WOF 8O
