removing hilux axles

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sat Aug 22, 2009 2:47 pm

whats the trick to removing hilux axles to get the head out? they don't want to move, but I can't see anything obvious holding them in...

do all the brakes/pads/cylinders etc have to come off first?

you can get the little plate out with the brakes still in there but its easier to do with them off.

take the 4 bolts ouf and should slide out. if they havnt been out for a while they might be rusted in and you might need a slide hammer to get them out,

once you get them out, sand off the rust (if there is rust) on the bearing and in the diff and put a small ammount of grease around the bearing wnen you but them back in this will help them to come out in future

once those four bolts are undone, and the brake lines disconnected, it should come out.(must be rust and time that is causing the hold up in this case) You only have to move the axles out a few inches each side to free the diff head.

What everyone else said. But if you don't have a slide hammer, who does?!
You can bolt an old drum brake or disk to the wheel mounting flange on the end of the axle so you have something to hit with a BIG hammer. You might damage the disk or drum, so use an old one aye.

Keep beating it(HARD), and suddenly it will just let go and fall out.
