Are 4a-gze rings forged?

Postby Paulio » Wed Aug 26, 2009 2:51 pm

Compared to standard 4ag rings, are gze rings forged or "semi-forged"?

(Toyota genuines)

the rings are usually made from a steel wire so i wouldnt think there would be much variation between non 4agze and 4agze ones apart from maybe the coating or the material if that.

only very very old (~30years ago) piston rings were cast from my knowldege

You need to ask toyota what material they are made out of, that way you can determine which are better.

If they use different part numbers between them I would stick to what ever the piston is meant to have.

I believe the GZE ones may have thicker rings?

Anyway, as said use the correct one for the pistons you have,
there may even be different ones for the different models,
MR2, Ae92 AFM, and Map?

Anyway I run genuine toyota AE101 GZE rings for 500hp so they are obviously quite good.

The early 4agze uses different thickness rings than the later model.
Early model has a 1.5mm top ring, late models 1.2mm top ring.

I also think the oil rings are a different thickness as well.

I think all the late model 4a pistons use the 1.2mm top ring.

The AE101 are near flat to look at on the top.

Yes pistons. The difference between the older bigport gze 8.0:1 and the smallport ones I have is pretty clear, hence flat top vs dished.

Most top rings these days are steel, and 2nd rings are usually cast iron.

the 8.9:1 pistons are not flat top.

flat means _______________________

They have a a small -5cc bowl in them.
